Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Proverbs 4:25 NLT
Have you ever been a passenger in a car driven by a distracted driver? While his hand are busy with a cell phone or the radio or whatever, yours are white-knuckle-gripping the armrests. While he’s looking anywhere except the road, you see every potential accident ahead of you.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted drivers killed 2,841 people in 2018 alone. In addition to the deaths of the drivers, these casualties also included 605 passengers, 400 pedestrians, and 77 bicyclists.
When driving, you have to be aware of your surroundings. If you aren’t looking where you’re going, you endanger yourself and everyone around you.
The same is true of your relationship with God. You may start your day in devotions and prayer, then get distracted by the concerns of the day. Soon you’re looking anywhere except where God wants your attention to be. Instead of being an example of God’s love, you are like a car sporting a Jesus fish decal whose driver is cutting off other drivers on the highway.
How can you be more mindful? Set an alarm to remind you to pray. Fast from a food or activity, and then when you find yourself wanting to do that thing, check in with God. Whatever you do, do it intentionally with your eyes fixed on God.
Prayer: God, keep my eyes from distractions.
