Todays Devotional - Wednesday April 4th - Caring
Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless. Plead the case of the widow. Isaiah 1:17
Today's verse spells out things the people of Israel weren't doing, but which God's law of love requires; He says, 'seek... encourage... defend... plead...' indicating that He longs for a society that cares for those who are least able to care for themselves. He wants us actively engaging with needy people; the spiritually lost, the poorest of the poor, the helpless, the hopeless.
On the day before the 'Last Supper' Jesus included this very subject in His teaching in the temple in Jerusalem; 'Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices - mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law - justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practised the latter, without neglecting the former.' (Matthew 23:23).
No wonder the religious leaders of the day wanted to kill Him! The Passover was, 'only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him.' (Mark 14:1).
We need to be asking ourselves if there's anyone we're in contact with who fits one of these 'critical-care categories'.
We should seek opportunities to both share the gospel and display the gospel's love to unbelievers, widows, orphans, prisoners and unfairly treated people in our neighbourhoods. In our multi-cultural society this may include people of other faiths, so we may need to ask God's help in overcoming a prejudice or a perceived danger.
Father - help me to share the good news and the amazing love of Jesus to others. Please give me opportunities this Holy Week to speak of Jesus. Amen.
