Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Psalm 37:4 KJV
It appeals to us on nearly every level: God’s promise to give us the desires of our hearts. Our hearts have so many desires, and God has every ability to fill them! God can give us wealth and fame, security and happiness. He can make us well liked and our children well behaved. God can do it all without even scratching the surface of His power.
But that isn’t what today’s verse is about.
Our heart having many desires is not an opportunity for God to show His power, but evidence that our heart doesn’t desire the right things. The only thing our heart should delight in is the Lord. When it does, we can have all the goodness we can handle.
Far from ensuring that we will live lives of plenty, God promises that no matter how lean our diets or how scarce our resources, we’ll have enough to do His will when we delight in His providence. We’ll always be happiest when doing what God has planned for us than when we’re following what we think will make us happy.
Delight yourself in the Lord, first and foremost, and your heart will desire exactly what God wants to give you.
Prayer: God, teach me to desire You most and to be happy with whatever You have planned for me.
