The Root Of The Problem
Depression usually has reason to it which I like to call the "Root of the Problem". There is a reason you feel this way. There is a reason your burden isn't light, and it's possible you may not know why. Healing starts with finding the Root(s) that caused your depression in the first place. Ask Jesus to go to the root of your problem with you to heal it so you know where to go and how to make repairs.Your heart will be healed if you work at it but you may have scar tissue, and scar tissue is not as painful.
Broken hearted, bad breakups, a lost loved one, disliking yourself, parental issues, a bad home life, not doing well in school; anything that brings you down to depression has to be rooted out like a weed.
Nobody wants weeds in their lawn they ripped out. Though, some people don't care for their yards have plenty of mangled weeds. Think of your feelings, do you want to get the weeds out that ruin your view on life? Do you want to go out and find the problems and do some cleaning?
It sounds easier than it is, but it works. As slow as depression crawls on us, it may just as slowly drag off. Don't lose hope; When it's gone it's as if it was never there or not nearly as heavy. Trust God and you have more than yourself to rely on. God wants you to rely on Him, I think it grieves God when we don't ask for anything and we choose not to rely on him. Don't just ask Him to do everything, pursue Him.
Just Getting By
You might feel like it's too hard to try and fix things and you just get by existing in life. It's a crappy feeling. Have you ever put off some work you had to do at a job or school and you must finish it at the last minute? The work slips your mind, or you rush to get it finished and wake up only with a name on a paper. It's too much to do at once by cramming it.
Put this in perspective to handling your depression. Maybe you occupy yourself to stay distracted from some issues of the heart, you can choose but you'll never be satisfied without the cure which is Jesus.
Depression isn't a quick fix, doing so can build yourself up to fall harder. Take each day slowly, progressively, and learn about what root has you at the ankles dragging you down.
Allow God's His Holy Spirit to reveal things you do not know. Even if you aren't ready and don't understand continually seek God and understand His ways. Make a habit of reading a verse a day or more, and talking to God about how you feel. It may surprise you that God cares when you see nothing being done at the moment.
Starting Out Suggestions
Instead of waking up and your first thoughts being, "Another bad day, I'm tired, I don't feel like waking up, I don't want to hear this or that.." You can start by saying "Lord, thank you for this day. I know you are with me and I will do my best to have a good day." Whether you have a good day or not, keep changing your mind set to the positive and start living with some faith.
What keeps bringing you down? Your thoughts. Your thoughts can bring you up if they become positive. Your faith and obedience in God will draw him near and he is good, he changes everything. Jesus deals with the inner-man, the inside of the cup. Positive thinking and trusting God is hard but it is essential. Take the following verse into practice.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.(NIV)
I'm speaking about depression widely and I know it may not apply directly to your situation but the basic way of helping yourself is changing your thought process. And always, God will help your depression no matter where it was birthed.
I've read some books and listened to quite a few audio tracks about depression, possibly you've heard of the "Midwest Stress Center - Attacking Anxiety and Depression". It was helpful, after the CDs' were over I had adjusted into a more positive thinking, but it was not based on God. It would be more beneficial the audio CDs' went more on the topic of God; our compassionate, loving Father. It wasn't as much help as I needed, I needed something real and bigger than myself. More than someone's advice, I needed something to touch my soul. I needed God. You need God more than you need counselor. A counselor will not root out your problems you have to do it with the Lord. If you are not forgiven of sins even if they do not apply to your depression you will always carry baggage around. Jesus Christ will forgive you and change you, but you can't fool Him.
Suffering
We all have experiences and it's about not "who went through what", but what's important is if any help is provided it's through the grace God has given. In the Bible David has anxiety and depression and changes his mind a lot speaking to his inner man and God; the book of Psalms.
Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?
God didn't leave David but it was David's perception that was wrong. It's not unnatural to doubt God when you are young in faith, we are human and we cannot see Him. Wondering where God is and examining your life for markings of the Lord is part of seeking Him.
Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.
Romans 8:25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
Romans 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Hebrews 10:36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
Trust God
I wish I could give you the answers to your problems, but my hands cannot handle things that need inner-healing. My hands can not do much. My hands change my life when lifted in surrender to God. There is no formula to a quick heal, God isn't a magic genie. Don't rely on people or even yourself, keep practice of relying on God. Put yourself in The Lords hands.
What about medication? Maybe it's for you. What about counseling? Possibly, but ask the Lord about these things. What if I have no money for either of them? Ask the Lord to provide a way! Most importantly, seeking the Lord comes first, above all else. You will find your questions to everything provided.
Lord Jesus,
You are such an amazing God. I say this not seeking praise of men, but for their benefit so that they may know you and your ways. My God, your love is so amazing and your healing touch is refreshing beyond compare. I pray for these people who suffer from depression that you will hear their cry; for they are seeking you. Thank you Jesus for loving us and offering your free gifts, not because we deserve it but because of WHO YOU ARE. I pray that your WORD will open their eyes, and Your Holy Spirit will give them understanding and intervene in their life for providing in needs. I ask you to show these people your forgiveness and mercy, so that they one day may glorify you God. Thank you Lord,
