“Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,’ so that we confidently say,
“‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?’
“Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:4-8 NASB1995)
When we who believe in Jesus Christ decide to get married to someone, we should pray and seek God’s guidance and direction, and we must be convinced in our own minds and hearts that the person we want to marry is also a believer in Jesus Christ. But when we are young and immature we may not yet have the spiritual maturity to discern these things as best as we should have, and so things may not always turn out as we thought they would, or as we had hoped they would. And people can change, too.
But it is God’s will and purpose for all of us who are planning to get married, or who are already married, that our marriages are to be held in honor, and our marriage beds are to be undefiled, for the sake of the health and the happiness of our marriages, and because God will judge the fornicators and the adulterers. And yet we live in a day and age when it appears that not many marriages these days are being held in honor by one or the other or by both marital partners. So many people today are addicted to immorality.
And sadly, statistics (the last time I checked) have it as high as 75% of Christian men in America who dabble in pornography and about 35% of pastors, too, with smaller numbers among women, but I think with increasing numbers now among children, especially children possessing or having free access to smartphones. So this would mean that not many “Christian marriages” are being held in honor with their marriage beds undefiled, for even to willfully lust after another is committing adultery.
And then we have a large majority who are buying into a cheapened (diluted, altered) gospel message which gives them the freedom to live in sexual immorality and in adultery against their spouses without consequence, and without it impacting their hope of salvation and of eternal life with God. And many are convinced that God will not judge them for their sexual addiction and continual adultery, and that he is going to let them into his heaven based on lip service only to God. But that is a lie from hell!
The Scriptures make it quite clear that if sin is what we practice, and not obedience to God, that we will not inherit eternal life with God, regardless of what professions of faith we have made in the Lord Jesus. Our only hope is to turn from our sins and to follow our Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, in holy living, from now to eternity, by the grace of God, in the power of God, as we surrender our lives to the will of God to do what he commands and to refrain from all he commands that we must forsake.
So, if we want to claim this promise from God that he will never desert us nor forsake us, then we must be those who are putting sin to death, by the Spirit, and who are walking in obedience to our Lord’s commands, in practice, and who are no longer making sin our practice. This doesn’t mean we will be perfect or that we will never sin (1 John 2:1-2), but that sin must not be our practice, and obedience to our Lord’s commands must be our practice. And then we can proclaim that the Lord is our helper.
And not only is He the helper of those who follow him in walks of obedience to his commands, but because he is our helper we do not need to fear being mistreated, betrayed, lied about, and sinned against by others who resent us, who are bitter against us, and who oppose us because of our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord’s commands. For when we follow Jesus with our lives we will have enemies and those who oppose us who may be those who say they believe in Jesus but who are living in willful and habitual sin.
And some of these “enemies” could be pastors and elders of institutional market-driven “churches” (businesses) who are teaching a very diluted and altered gospel which appeals to human flesh. And it could be they do this to ease their own consciences because they are living in deliberate and habitual sin against the Lord, and/or because they are trying to attract the ungodly to their gatherings and so they do not want to offend the ungodly with the truth of the gospel, so they make it less offensive to draw in large crowds.
So, be very careful and be very discerning about who you follow and whose faith you imitate, for it appears that the majority are teaching and/or are believing in a diluted gospel message which makes no requirements for putting sin to death and walks of obedience to our Lord’s commands. And many of them are teaching that God will not judge you for your addictive sins if you have professed him as Lord and Savior of your life. But the Bible teaches that if sin is our practice, we will not inherit eternal life with God.

God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Heb. 13:5).
“Never will I leave you, nor will I forsake you.”
Jesus is your Savior; love and comfort keep you.
He is your deliverer; Rock of your salvation;
Cornerstone, rejected by men; mighty God is He!
Hope of your salvation; He is your Redeemer.
He is living in you as your Lord and Master.
He will not forget you, nor will He neglect you.
He knows all about you; He will supply all you need.
God of your redemption’s perfect plan to save you
Sacrificed for your sin, so you’d be forgiven.
He loves and adores you; perfectly He made you
So that you might be His servant and child of the King.
