Deeply Disappointed? Pray

Deeply hurt, Hannah prayed to the LORD and wept with many tears. Making a vow, she pleaded, "LORD of Armies, if you will take notice of your servant's affliction, remember and not forget me, and give your servant a son, I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut." 1 Samuel 1:10-11 HCSB

Here’s a reminder to Christian men: never overlook the example of biblical women.

Hannah’s pain was twofold, not entirely applicable to guys today. As a woman of childbearing age, she couldn’t conceive. And as part of a polygamous marriage, she was mocked by her husband’s fertile second wife. Hannah’s response provides the lesson for us.

Yes, she cried and, in her sorrow couldn’t eat. These were natural emotional reactions. But then she consciously chose to pray, a prayer recorded in the book named for her miracle answer.

Life throws many disappointments, trials, and tragedies at us. We will undoubtedly have immediate emotional reactions—but then, like Hannah, let’s pray. We should pray even in the hardest moments…especially in those moments. Prayer is where we meet God and He can respond to our needs.

Hannah ultimately received exactly what her heart desired. We may or may not, depending on God’s perfect judgment. But far better to pray, spending time in His presence, than stewing and plotting our own solutions.

Prayer: Lord of Hosts, please take notice of Your servant’s afflictions. Remember me.
