Affirmed and anointed
'It is like the ... oil ... running down ...' Psalm 133:2
If people can lift you up, they can also bring you down. In April 1993, Arsenal footballer Steve Morrow was thrown high in the air for scoring the winning goal that won them the Championship Cup. But they didn't catch him! Morrow was carried off the field on a stretcher with a broken arm and an oxygen mask over his face. In Celebrity Big Brother this year, rapper Lady Sovereign survived the first two evictions thanks to the public vote. A few days later she became the third celebrity to be voted out the Big Brother house with 69.5% of the vote; walking out to intense booing from the crowd. 'Bigged up' one minute and 'totally dissed' the next.
Psalm 133 talks about '... oil ... poured over Aaron's head, that ran down his beard and onto ... his robe.' Now the thought of being covered in oil may sounds minging. But being anointed with oil in Bible times was something special. The oil was a sign of God affirming you; like God 'biggin' you up'.
With God we are loved and stay loved. He never 'drops us' never 'votes us out'. 'Christ's anointing teaches you the truth on everything you need to know about yourself and Him.' (1 John 2:27). God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ. By his Spirit He has stamped us with his eternal pledge; a sure beginning of what He is destined to complete.
