If you have been a fool by being proud or plotting evil, cover your mouth in shame. Proverbs 30:32 NLT
Body language experts say one sure sign that someone is lying to you is covering his mouth. It seems to be an automatic response to doing or saying something shameful. In today’s verse, it’s a device the believer is supposed to use to stop himself from foolishly propagating pride or plotting evil.
Of course, this can be a figurative action. The point it is, you are called to intentionally stop pride or plotting evil the second you recognize it in yourself. Is this something you are good at doing? Or do you often go too far, making things even worse? Proverbs 25:28 (AMPC) says, “He who has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls.”
The good news is, the Holy Spirit enables you to exhibit self-control in all areas of your life. You don’t have to stay stuck in your old patterns. Titus 2:11-12 (ESV) says, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”
Don’t wait.
Prayer: Lord, may Your grace train me to renounce all forms of ungodliness and fill me with self-control.
