As I have been living awhile and pressing life issues have sapped most of my time, I have not studied this aspect but have "heard" the oldest references to spirit are words such as water, air, breath, and life, and such.
There is the spirit of one's motivation or why one does what it does. There is the motivation or spirit of utter complete stingy selfishness and there is the motivation of utter selflessness or, the term that comes to my mind is, abject altruism. Of the latter, there is only One: God/Jesus who has acted out of this motivation.
As universe exists as a sea before God, the spiritual realm is greater dimension than mere physical universe.
There is,also, the spirit of one's interaction. When God's Spirit moved upon the face of the deep or universe, He did so out of a motivation of and influence toward giving and provision. Us humans may interact out of a motivation of good but interact in a spirit of anger or hatefulness and vice versa.
The iniquity that was found in satan, devil, enemy of humanity, or the one that used the serpent to speak with Eve was the motivation or spirit of selfishness and jealousy and envy that humanity had God's attention. Though his interaction with Eve was non-threatening the influence he exerted was toward our/humanity's self-harm and toward making humanity aware that we could act out of the same motivation by which he was. He appealed to her selfishness in saying "you can be as gods" and humanity has and human's have acted out of this motivation and have spread this influence ever since.
Only when God's Spirit, motivation and influence, is spread abroad in our hearts are we in position to be used of God that some "good", planting and watering for kingdom fruit, might be done through us that God may provide increase.
