He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. Psalm 112:7

In Journalism 101, students are told there is no such thing as "good news." Instead, there are only occasional "brights" to slip into the midst of all the bad news of the day.

Terrorist attack, Stock market down, Rape in local park. "Bright." Fortune 500 corporate merger proposed. Grisly triple homicide, University assistant coach accused of sexual assault. "Bright." Amazon CEO holds press conference. State SAT scores down for sixth year, Historic department store closes its doors for the last time. "Bright."

The reality is that no "bright" can change the reality of the bad news that precedes it.

It's enough to make you discouraged, distressed, even depressed…that is, unless your heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

Whatever else Psalm 112:1-9 tells us about godly men, it makes it clear they don't fear or lose sleep over bad news. It's not a matter of denying the reality of daily life "in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation" (Philippians 2:15). Instead, it's a matter of trusting the One who's so much bigger than society at large. His infinite power, wisdom, holiness, and love keep you strong and steady, no matter what.

Prayer: Lord, my focus isn't on the news. It's on You--always You. Your infinite greatness gives me so much joy and peace.
