If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 NKJV
In Scientific American magazine, psychologist James W. Pennebaker writes that the act of confession, whether religious or through expressive writing, is linked to less stress, better sleep, and improved cardiovascular function. Science agrees that confession isn’t just good for the soul…it is good for the body too.
But while the health benefits are great, they aren’t the best part of confession; forgiveness is, because it sets us on the path to restoring our broken relationship with God.
Confessing our sins to God doesn’t give Him any new information. He already knows what we’ve done. The act of confession allows us to take responsibility for our actions. God won’t necessarily take away the consequences of our sins, but He will take away the barrier that stops us from having a right relationship with Him.
Do you have sins you need to confess? Is something holding you back from being in a right relationship with God? Confess, be forgiven, and start living the life God intended for you. Even science agrees that you’ll sleep easier once you have!
Prayer: Lord, I need Your forgiveness. You know the ways I have hurt our relationship, but You’ve promised to forgive me anyway. Help me avoid the need for forgiveness in the future, but keep me coming back to You when I do need it.
