Mockers can get a whole town agitated, but the wise will calm anger. Proverbs 29:8 NLT
Uncontrolled anger is a mark of the shaken. Shaken people inspire other people to shake and then quake. Worry and anxiety are the great stealers of confidence. Believing you’re a victim creates trust issues.
Today’s verse points out two things to do (actually, not do) when you want to become or stay unshaken: don’t mock and don’t stay angry. If you haven’t used the word mock in a while, here’s a short list of related words: belittle, despise, disdain, insult, ridicule, scorn, trash-talk. This kind of personality “can get a whole town agitated.”
The unshaken, on the other hand, will speak words that calm and offer hope. It’s the difference between shaken and unshaken, between a setting sun and a rising sun, between a fearful outlook and a confident outlook.
You have come face-to-face with examples of what an unshaken life looks like, and you’ve also met people who are easily shaken. Compare their stories. Contrast the outcomes. Consider why it is important to God that His people live unshaken.
Prayer: God, it’s easy to think I’ve been dealt a bad hand. I can even come to the place where I think You don’t care. At these times I may be tempted to mock You, insult others, and cause trouble. Help me to remember that allowing myself to become shaken will always affect others.
