"I love my master........I will not go out free - Exodus 21: 5
The central figure of this picture is a Hebrew slave. Just behind him stand his wife and children. Now the law by which his engagement has been governed, bids the master set him free. He can go out free.
How many slaves have lived for that day! Yet there is no attraction about it for this particular slave. The whole idea of freedom sounds grand, but it is only the momentary pause that anticipated a different master.
Possibly a new and unknown slavery, and he will have no such gamble with his life. The master he has already served shall remain as his master, and he shall remain his servant.
Notice that this decision was grounded in devotion. That is the only ground upon which any such decision can be made 'I love my master' "The love of Christ constraineth us, because we thus judge......that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him who died for them, and rose again"
Do you love your Master? If you do you will not cut away from His control, and call it liberty.
And if the decision that he made was grounded in devotion, then I notice also that it was given with determination "I will not go out free" I can well understand that much may seem to be attractive at first sight which would seek to pull you and I from utter devotion to our Lord.
I wonder if our love for Jesus is shot through with real determination; or whether it is sickly and flabby and sentimental and weak.
Is there a streak of determination running right through your affection for Jesus? "I will not go out free, He is my Master. I love Him and will serve Him forever"
