I will behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will You come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me. Psalm 101:2-3 NKJV
The great UCLA men’s basketball coach John Wooden once said, “Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”
Most men, if you asked them if their reputation is important to them, would answer with a resounding “Yes!” But many don’t make the connection between reputation and true character, which has been defined as how you behave when no one is watching.
God cares far more about your character than your reputation among humans. He wants you to live, speak, and think in ways that please and glorify Him—even when He is the only One watching.
Unshakable character comes from an unwavering commitment to God’s ways, God’s commands, and God’s written Word. Hold to all those things, and you’ll be more likely to enjoy a good reputation.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know You want me to live a life of unshakable character. But I also know I can’t do that on my own. Strengthen me by Your Holy Spirit to consistently live, speak, and think in ways that honor You.
