Do not be like your ancestors and relatives who abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, and became an object of derision, as you yourselves can see. Do not be stubborn, as they were, but submit yourselves to the LORD. Come to his Temple, which he has set apart as holy forever. Worship the LORD your God so that his fierce anger will turn away from you. 2 Chronicles 30:7-8 NLT

Thousands of people turned their backs on God. One good king stood between the Promised Land and exile. King Hezekiah ordered the temple repaired and reopened. The people needed a place to worship—and a time to celebrate the long-neglected Passover. The people needed to remember the God who rescues.

Some people failed to remember God. Many others had mounted a collective rebellion against Him. Hezekiah was doing everything he could to foster an environment where God was welcome. God blessed Hezekiah for his faithfulness.

Maybe you didn’t have the greatest example of godly living as a child. Maybe you didn’t have a clear picture of how to be that example. You can plead with others to engage in a new and faithful endurance like king Hezekiah: “Do not be like your ancestors and relatives who abandoned the Lord…Do not be stubborn, as they were, but submit yourselves to the Lord…Worship the Lord your God.” Yeah, do that.

Prayer: Lord, if someone doesn’t come from a family that honored You, he can still set an example for his children. Let me be that example.
