As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly. Proverbs 26:11

Today is Groundhog Day, and in the movie Groundhog Day, Bill Murray plays Phil, an arrogant weatherman who relives the same day over and over until he learns to become a better person. Because it’s a movie, the process has a sort of inevitability—you know Phil will learn his lesson, realize that other people have feelings, and get the girl in the end, snapping the time loop and moving forward.

Real life offers no such guarantees. The world promises liberty in the form of things that sound like the work of an accomplished man—a successful career, the ability to hold your liquor (and lots of it), and the attention of desirable women. But true freedom in Christ delivers you from the dark side of those same things—enslavement to the corporate ladder, hangovers and addiction, and empty affairs that leave you feeling less than you were meant to be.

It’s even worse if you know Jesus and then return to those old-man habits. It’s no different than when your dog eats his own upchuck. The only true freedom from a Groundhog Day cycle of sin is to give your life wholly and unreservedly to Jesus. The future He has for you won’t be problem-free, but you’ll be free of the pressure to conform to the world and its ways.
