"No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24

You’ve heard the term “putting God in a box.” It’s usually a reference to a person who believes God only works in ways that match his preconceived ideas. Today’s verse provides a different example of putting God in a box…and leaving Him there.

God is often placed in a proverbial box marked, “Open once a weekend and only during times of absolute emergency.” It’s a comfort to have the box handy, but it’s only intended for specific uses and is rarely opened daily. Other boxes are filled with an assortment of life enhancements. Usually these boxes are linked to enjoyable pursuits or personal possessions. You may find yourself drawn to these boxes because they hold a promise for immediate happiness.

You might tell others you believe God is important, but if it were a contest between which box you spend more time with, God might be hidden away in a box of your making while you keep drawing things from boxes that distract you from the neglected God-box in the corner.

YOU CAN ONLY SERVE ONE. Splitting time between the boxes suggests a divided loyalty. Enjoy the things God has given you, but make sure He has your love, time, and heart. Let Him out of the box.
