"Bigger Than You"

Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai ---
-Jonah 1:1 NKJV As we continue to consider God's calling upon a person's life, we turn our attention to one of the key examples in Scripture that deals with this issue. The life of Jonah serves as a warning for those who have been called, because as most of us know, Jonah initially failed in his response to God's call. But despite his failure, there's a lot to learn from the commission the Lord placed upon him.
Jonah begins his book by writing that his divine commission came as the word of the LORD came to him. The grounds for the call did not reside within Jonah. He did not come up with it on his own or bring it to the table and say, 'This is what I think I'm going to do.' It was much bigger than that, much bigger than him. The call placed upon his life was wrapped up in the eternal and unfailing Word of God.
The same holds true in our lives. Our calling does not come from within ourselves; it is not the by product of our imagination, nor is it the fruit of our ideas. It is based on something much bigger than any of this, something much bigger than us. God's calling is founded and predicated on His Word, which does not change or waver in the face of circumstances.
We need to remember the authoritative backing behind our calling. It's not us; it's the almighty God who has spoken, declared, and decreed what we're to do with our lives. Knowing this will see us through the tough times when accomplishing our calling seems hopeless and out of reach. What a blessing to be able to say in those moments, 'This is so much bigger than me.' We are called by an authority far greater than ourselves--the Word of the Lord.
