Hello Family,

I know this is a bit of a random question, maybe even silly or elementary but I really want help in learning more on my journey and relationship with Christ.

My question is simply, How do you partake in bible study? What steps do you personally take? Do you randomly pick a topic that is your personal affliction at the time or is there a science to it? I sincerely need help with this, I feel as though I've been randomly going about this and I want order. So please, can you help? I want to know what it is that you do or what it is that I should do. At the moment, I just use resources to find daily bible verses and I feel it should be so much more.

Thank you so much,

Your Brother

An excellent question brother! Everyone has there own method, but I will give you mine if you wish. After becomeing a believer and did not really want to much order in my life, lol but i sure needed it! The first study was done first in prayer,Matt 6:6 get alone with God, first step. You ever talk to someone you really care to talk to,and someone comes by to interupt you? Or you are talking to someone about something important and there cell phone rings and they take the call in front of you, basically telling you that you are not as important as the one whom they are talking to? RUDE!!! Isn't it?

That is what we learn through Christ Jesus to,he wants your undivided attention, and we must learn this, one way or another. Next, would be, what foundation do you have?Is it strong enough to with stand anything that comes against you? Or do you need to have the Lord build you a much stronger one? The first study for me was done on love. That no matter how I feel or what I am going through I KNOW!! God loves me!So important to me bro! Not allowing myself to condemn myself,or let anyone else condemn me! To make things as easy on you as I can, read and study 1 cor 13:4-8 in the amphified version!!

That is how divine love is both given and received at all times! This is how we struggle to be and stay! As you can tell, it is a long and tough study! It takes a great deal of time, but a mind which is trained in knowing and delivering this kind of love God matures and causes you to grow far greater then one who does not build upon this foundation! I looked to skip this one bro, looking to something a bit more easier. LOL My house crumbled, because the very foundation of the nature of Jesus and his children all stems from this! Without it bro we can make a very loud noise, but have no result!( 1 cor 13:1)

To KNOW Jesus always love them,so important! matt 3:17 see what the words says here bro This is my BELOVED Son in whom I am well pleased, and notice what word the devil omitted when he first tempted Jesus!! (matt 4:3) The devil knew that one who knows they are loved has no fear!! of anyone!! Or anything!!( 1 john 4:17-19!!) The whole chapter of first john 4 can also be studied in line with knowing you youself are called HIS BELOVED!! 1 John 4:1 verse 7 verse 11 See!! YOU are God's own beloved just as his Son is! Do this brother and you will really mature in both your self and the words you chose to help others!! ( col 4:6)

These words come from his very love my beloved!! amen You see brother as Paul knew, we must also learn,we move forward in Christ Jesus!! ALWAYS forward!( phil 3:12-14) Because we KNOW!! If or since!! God be for us which he always is, WHO??? or what has a chance against us??( rom 8:31-39) You see bro? We are not looking to become a conquer, we in Christ already are!! verse 37,BUT!! one must believe this!!And our believe comes from abiding in God's Word daily!! Hope this help you brother, sure has helped me! Not a hope like the worlds hope, well i sure hope this works. LOl Nope an assurence hope!! this kind!! ( rom 15:13) For God's hope causes us to ALWAYS!! have both joy and peace believing!! amen! Hope by the Power of Holy Spirit amen! Blessing bro!

Dear Brother Brighthouse,

I pray that God finds all the right blessings to put in your life because you deserve such after taking time to not only write but include verses with love in them. I'm so thankful that you took a portion of your day to do that. That was purely a blessing my brother. I took time to read almost all the verses you included and wrote ALL of them down for further inspection later. I truly can't thank you enough for taking your time to write that message and engulf it with the family love! I'm going to pray and thank God for you and everyone who took the time to read this and who will write later. Thank you so much Brighthouse, from the bottom of my loving heart.

Thank you again

I thought you might find this helpful. I sat under a great man of God who taught me such things as how to do bible study, be a servant, and worship the Lord.

1. Pick a time of the day and a place that can be regular each day.
2. Have a pad and pen
3. Pray that the Lord will prepare your heart and spirit eyes to hear and see what He has for you
4. Read the Scriptures, which can be a paragraph or longer, but not too long
5. Repeat 3 and 4 three times
6. Read the passage one more time
7. On the pad note the date, the passage, and what kind of day you have had
8. Write what the Lord brings to your mind regarding the passage

You will find that this can be a very rewarding bible study. I found some of my notes from a few years previous and was amazed at what the Lord taught me.

Your brother in the Lord,
Russ

Hi, marketing_kid, the primary goal in reading the bible is to learn how to imitate God.

I have met some people who brag about reading the whole bible every year, but their words and behavior seam to suggest what they are reading is not having a significant affect on them.

When studying the bible, although you cannot apply this to every verse you read, I try to ask myself, what is this verse teaching me about God's way of thinking and reasoning. Paul urged Christians in Romans 12:2, (AMP): "Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]." God is more interested in what is going on in our inside than out side of ourselves, because whatever in happening on our inside will sooner or later make an appearance on our out side life. You can have a head full of knowledge, but if it does not affect how you think and behave, in God's eyes it is of very little value.

I know this comes seriously late, Russ, but I wanted to thank you so much for the advice. I've actually incorporated it into my studies along with everyone else. Thank you!

Davy,

Thank you so much for the words of advice. I'll definitely have that in mind as I study and look at it from that perspective. I'm sorry this is late, had a lot on my plate the last month but my thanks is deep!

I use all the above methods to varying degrees at different times.
In the the beginning of my journey into the word I even tried opening randomly but about half the time I would land on something like "thou shalt surley die" so I quit doing that.
I personally feel that the Gospel of John contains all the essential building blocks to understand the heart of God and Jesus and their love and plan for all mankind.Chapter 17 contains Jesus's prayer to the Father before going to the cross and whether you believe his prayer was answered by God or not will make a huge difference in the direction of your journey of faith.

I recommend studying the heart and words of Jesus in the 4 gospels and don't worry if you don't understand something, just absorb it and it will sort itself out in time. The true nature of the love of God is somewhat obscured in the old testament which is why Jesus said in
John 10:8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them

The old testament is very helpfull as long as we don't let it steer us back to the old ways that Jesus died to free us from.
The important thing about however you study it should minister life, hope, faith and love because in his presence is the fullness of joy.
Godspeed in your word journey brother.

First I pray about what God would like me to teach about. Learning the answer to that question is often much harder for me then making up the lesson after I know the subject.

If I were going to do a class on love, I would go to my Strong’s concordance and look up verses with the word love in them.

Everything you said makes sense. I tried the "open randomly and study" method a few times and I usually ended up with the same results as you which is why I stopped as well lol

I've read John here and there, but never studied it fully so that's definitely something I'll look more into, thank you for the advice, it's truly appreciated.

Eric,

Thank you for your response. To be honest, I often forget to pray that God direct my studies. You'd think by now I'd think to ask our Father beforehand lol

I actually use your last suggestion on manny occasions. I'll look for specific verses that carry words or meaning and study them in depth. Thank you for taking time to respond! I hope these suggestions help others who may have the same issue.

Hi brother, I have a good "20 rules for bible study" guide that I have used since my discipler and I first met. I'll post it from my computer when I get a chance, send me a pm to remind me because I'm about to start a 16 hour shift and I have a badmemory.

As for me as a new believer I studied Christian science and creation at first, primarily to prove to myself evolution was a hoax, I then moved to apologetics as I wanted proof that I believed the truth and why other religions fell short. It's not necessary for everyone, but I like having q good foundation. Kent hovind has excellent science videos out there.

Twenty Rules for Bible Study:

1. Before you ask what a verse means determine its context.
2. The Bible is written to 3 groups of people: Jew, Gentile, and Church.
3. The Bible has proper divisions (dispensations) and you must put these divisions in the right place. (2 Tim 2:15)
4. All Scripture has 3 applications: Historical, Doctrinal and Inspirational.
5. God has chosen the EXACT words HE wants to use and the events to show us “Something”.
6. God has 3 distinct plans in the Bible: 1.) The Universe. 2.) The Earth. 3.) Your life.
7. The invisible things of God can be clearly seen by studying the visible (Rom 1:20)
8. The Bible is of NO Private interpretation (2 Pet 1:20)
9. The individual words of the Bible are the Key to the Bible.
10. Always give the Bible the benefit of doubt; The Bible is the final authority in ALL things
11. Never forget the constancy of the Bible.
12. Remember the “Principle” of first mention.
13. Always take a passage literally until it is impossible for you to take it literally.
14.Always be prepared to change whatever you have been taught or believed when it proves to be contrary to the Bible, Never make what the says Bible align with your beliefs, Align yourself with the Bible.
15. Numbers are a major Key in the Bible, yet one must use caution as not to overstate the importance of these numbers:
1- Unity 2-Division 3- Structure of Universe 4- “Your guess is as good as mine” 5- Death 6- Man
7- Perfection, Completeness 8- New Beginning 9- Fruit Bearing 10- Gentiles 12- Israel 13- Rebellion
40- Testing 1000- millennium, division.
16. Never violate a clear passage while trying to understand an obscure.
17. Never base a doctrine on a question.
18. Never base a doctrine on a single verse or passage.
19. Pay particular attention to the warnings in the Bible.
20. If you find something you don’t understand try your best to “Get it” Being careful NOT to violate any of the above Rules. If you still do not understand a verse or passage do not worry, God reveals his Word to us in progression, as we are able to “handle” it. (Isa 28:9, Jn 16:12) JUST BE CERTAIN TO LIVE THAT WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN SHOWN

Thank you so much for those steps. I know this is a bit late; Life and school consumed most of my time but I want you to know I sincerely thank you for all of your help. I was suppose to respond to your message a while back but it totally blew my mind. Thank you, it means a lot that you took time to respond.
