Bewitched By Work? - April 01, 2007
There are addicts of all sorts. There are alcoholics and workaholics. Where do you fit? Perhaps you are not addicted to drugs or alcohol; but are you addicted to work? Many people are. It's a primary source of stress.
"Who has bewitched you?" (Galatians 3:1). Do you think you are going to get ahead in God's world by work alone? Then you probably think you can please God and find a happy place in the life to come on the basis of good works. However, the Bible asks, "Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?" (Galatians 3:3).
Now don't get me wrong, hard work does produce results as many a success story will attest. A great danger remains. Work can cast a spell on you. You really think your personal worth is wrapped up in your achievements. You are driven. You are impelled to prove yourself to everyone by the work you accomplish. You are bewitched by work. As a result, you are stressed beyond your limit.
You need new perspective on your job. God encourages hard work. He requires high performance too. The objective is not self-exaltation. Our work reflects on God. We labor with His strength in order to glorify Him. This perspective is the proper answer to the problem of self-imposed stress.
