"Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. "And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever. "Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, Deuteronomy 28:45-47 NKJV

God had called the people of Israel to be a sign to all nations of the power and glory of the Lord. If they abandoned that sacred mission to live in obedience to and fellowship with God, their future would darken. The greatest threat to their future was, in fact, their prosperity, which could cause them to forget their need for God.

You or someone you know may be praying for God’s provision right now, and while such prayers are encouraged and modeled throughout the Bible, there is a dark side. As you depend on God for your provision, comfort and prosperity can result in depending on your own resources and wisdom. You can lose sight of your need for God and depend on your own wisdom or follow your own priorities. Wealth isn’t necessarily a blessing unless you continue to joyfully serve God.

Prayer: Lord, help me to joyfully serve You in faith and hope without being distracted by what I have.

Reminds me of a proverb.
Proverbs 30
7“Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
8Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
9Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.
