“I hate those who are double-minded,
But I love Your law.
You are my hiding place and my shield;
I wait for Your word.
Depart from me, evildoers,
That I may observe the commandments of my God.
Sustain me according to Your word, that I may live;
And do not let me be ashamed of my hope.” (Psalm 119:113-116 NASB1995)

In the New Testament we are taught that we are not to hate anyone, but that we are to love all people. But we are to hate what some people do, and how they live, for we are to hate what is evil and we are to cling to what is good. So hate the evil, and hate the act of being double-minded, but don’t hate the people of this world. For we are to love even our enemies. And we are to pray for them, and do good to them, and speak to them what is for their ultimate good, as God defines good, and not as human flesh does.

So, who are the double-minded? And what does it mean to be double-minded? I always think of it like a teeter-totter (a seesaw), which is “a long beam balanced on a central pivot point that allows two children to rock up and down” (AI). Only think of the two children as one person who is going up and down continually in thought, behavior, and belief. One moment he is espousing the full gospel as Jesus taught it, and the next moment he is expressing the exact opposite of that in thought, word, and behavior.

And then consider the definitions of these words “teeter” and “totter.” For to teeter is to stagger, to wobble, and to waver. And to totter is to falter, to stumble, and to flounder. And a person who does this is someone who is unable (or unwilling) to decide between different courses, like going back and forth between believing that we must, by faith in Jesus, deny self, die to sin, and obey God, and then changing faith to believe that a profession of faith alone will save one from his sins and guarantee heaven upon death.

And we read in James 1 that if we ask God for wisdom, that we must “ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (see James 1:5-8 NASB1995). And that is what is meant by “teeter-totter,” too. And teeter-totters are for children, i.e. for the immature who are the childish, the self-indulgent, and the selfish, who are the foolish.

So hate the concept and the actions of the double-minded, but don’t hate the people. Love them and pray for them and do good to them, the good that God would have you to do for them, which has to include speaking the truth of God’s words to them, in love, for their ultimate good. For pacifying people in their sin is never loving or kind or for their good. They need to hear the truth spoken to them, but spoken in love, out of a heart that cares and is concerned for those trapped in sin, that they might be set free!

But if there are evildoers among us who are disguising themselves as servants of righteousness, who are spreading lies about what God requires of us and so they are deceiving the masses into rejecting the true gospel in favor of the lies, we want them to depart, not only from us, but from all people who they are manipulating into rejecting the truth and into believing the lies. And we should be those who are exposing the lies which they are spreading, and who are spreading the truth of the gospel of Christ, instead.

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

For by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness in walks of obedience to God’s commands. We are no longer to permit sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

So, cling to the truth of God’s word, and despise and reject the lies of the devil which so many people today are spreading as though they are truth. And be students of the Scriptures who study them in their appropriate biblical context, who also compare Scripture with Scripture, for the message of the gospel must be consistent all throughout the Scriptures. For it is not going to teach that self-denial, dying to sin, and obedience to God is what is required of God, and then teach lip service only as what is required of God.

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
