Between Friends

There once was a milkman in the early 1900's named Jack. He and his horse, Pierre, did their job every day with joy in their hearts. Jack wasn't so bright and he couldn't read so when people needed extra milk, they would call to Jack as he left. They would yell, "I'll need some extra milk tomorrow!" which Jack would always reply,"To give your friends some pleasure!"

Jack and Pierre were great friends and did their job for years and years. After a while, Jack didn't have to do much anymore because Pierre knew where and when to stop. The friends continued their job until one sad morning.

Jack came into work one day to find his boss waiting for him.

"Jack," said his boss,"I have some sad news. This morning, Pierre died in his stall."

Tears started to run down Jack's face.

"It's OK Jack," said his boss. "He was an old horse."

"I will never see my friend again," said Jack tearfully.

"Yes you will. He's laying in his stall very peacefully right now. You can see him now if you'd like."

"You do not understand. I will never see Pierre again."

"I understand your sadness. You may have the day off if you'd like."

"No, I have a job to do," and with that Jack walked off. He was given a new horse and carriage and he went off to do his job.

That day, Jack was in an accident. His carriage was hit by an automobile. When his boss heard this, he rushed down to where the accident was. When he got there he asked, "Is Jack OK?"

"No, he died in the crash," said the doctor.

"I don't understand," said the driver of the automobile. "It was like he didn't even see me!"

"That's because he didn't. This man has been blind for 5 years," said the doctor.

"I never knew!" said Jack's boss.

"He didn't tell you?" said the doctor.

Just then, Jack's boss remembered what Jack said about Pierre. "No, but someone else knew. "

"Who?" asked the doctor.

"A friend of Jack's. His name was Pierre. I think that it was just a little secret between friends."

Loved your story also Chad;

I can tell a similar story of a dog who was my friend.
Her name was Jill.
I had the honor of being her friend for 9 years before she died.

All the years we had her, she was closer than most my human family.
She watched with careful eye, and knew my feelings.
When I was sick she would lay next to me, and lay her head over the back of mine, and stayed there until she knew I felt better.

She was my protector, and somehow knew those she could trust and those she didn't.
She would stand between me, and anything she thought to be a danger to me.
Growling softly with hair up on the back of her neck, to let me know to be careful.
She was a gentle presence, faithful, and always loving.
'
When she got sick she never complained, but gave of herself faithfully, and without reservation anyway.
She fought to stay alive because she didn't want to leave us, but time took its tole, and we laid her to rest.

There were times, in the middle of the night, I would wake with what
felt like her laying her head on the bed beside my arm, as she often did, but she wasn't there.
I still miss her, for she loved without reservation, never found fault, always a true friend.
Animals are like that, you know, if we are the same to them....

I have a photo of her,I'll try to post.

A Dog Taught Me To Love

Peppy was a female Fox Terrier who started hanging around our house in the early 1980s and my wife, being a dog lover, fed her. I didn't argue against it because I thought the dog was cute. We found out that she belonged to a guy who lived nearby. so my wife took the dog back to her owner one day. A couple of days later, she was back at our door again. This happened several times. It turned out that the dog was being mistreated by her owner. So, she showed up at our house one more time and moved in. We just new that she was there to stay.

I was newly sober at the time and I had serious anger issues. My wife and children didn't like being around me much because they were afraid of me. But, Peppy would come up to me, wag her tail, jump up into my lap if I was sitting, and I would melt like ice cream on a summer day.

I firmly believe that God used that dog to begin the process of healing my anger, the process of teaching me about love. Peppy would be under my feet almost constantly from the time I got home from work until bedtime. but I didn't mind.In fact, I enjoyed it. I nicknamed her "My Beloved Pest" and she was beloved!

are they not, just wonderful?

The sensitivity animals give to us humans ,I feel, is a small glimp's of something we lost at the garden, but see in small doses as a reminder.

We had a horse named Amigo who was the same way.
He too, was a true friend.

God is Good....all the time, but none is as faithful as our Lord, even though I'm thankful for having them.

Good points between the line . . .

I hear the joy of experience on leaning onto a friend in need, in life, in love and trust. . .

I also hear the sadness of going blind and the sickness and dependency (*is that a word?)
of loosing my life by TOO much leaning. . .

When I saw this thread I thought it was about human relationships/friendships. . .

My friend and I have been best girlfriends for 18 or 19 years? today . . .
I have to look it up

However, thats the reason I chose to read this story,
to learn new inputs for her and I as we dont live close to each other and will phone on our Anni tonight . . .

What I learned from this story is:

You should have someone to fill your heart 100% with that friendship,

but that person should never be the one your addicted to. . .

There is only one name that can fill your heart with that purpose for good
and never disappoints you:
JESUS

Everyone else is second best, may God bless our second bests

Thank you for that story Chad :embarasse

He called me many years ago, and has never failed me.
