"Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Luke 6:36 NKJV
If we’re honest with ourselves, many of us would have to admit that Jesus’ command in the above scripture verse isn’t the easiest one to obey consistently. When we’re carelessly cut off in traffic, when someone insults or belittles us, when the boss treats us unfairly, when…well, when these kinds of things happen to us, mercy and forgiveness aren’t usually the first things that come to mind.
Mercy is a huge deal to God, so big that Hew sent His Son to die so that He could pour out mercy on us, so big that He commands us over and over in scripture to show mercy to others, even when they don’t deserve it…especially when they don’t deserve it!
The bottom line is that when we show mercy, especially when it’s not deserved, we demonstrate a heart of obedience to the Lord, we do our part to be at peace with others, and we show gratitude to the God who forgives and showers us with mercy, freely and willingly, whenever we mess up.
Prayer: Father, thank You for being merciful to me. On my own, I can’t be as merciful to others as You call me to be. Strengthen me and soften my heart so that I can obey Jesus’ call for me to be merciful, just as You are merciful.
