And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you that you should strike me these three times? Numbers 22:28 AMPC
The story of Balaam and his donkey (found in Numbers 22) is pretty funny. Balaam, the world-renowned seer-for-hire (or for-profit prophet) cannot see the angel blocking him on his way to deliver a curse upon Israel. He has been blinded by greed, but his donkey can see reality clearly. When God enables the donkey to speak, Balaam converses with her as though this were a normal, everyday thing. Then God opens Balaam’s eyes to see what the donkey sees, and he reacts just as the donkey did—he bows down, falling on his face. When the angel calls out Balaam’s cruel treatment of his donkey, Balaam recognizes his in but is sorrier for getting caught than for committing the sin.
Numbers 22:34 says, “Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. But now, if my going displeases You, I will return.”
It would probably be a funnier episode if it didn’t sound so familiar. Talking donkeys aren’t prevalent but people are still blinded by sin, treat miracles as commonplace vents, and feel worse about getting caught than committing sin. Sound familiar? Pray about it!
Prayer: Lord, open my eyes and heart to Your truth.
