Aspiring to Greatness
1 Corinthians 1:26-29

In my community many years ago was a young man named Bill who was a great football running back at the former Lee Edwards High School. When game time arrived on Fridays, the crowds would pour out to watch Bill defeat the opponents almost single-handedly. Bill's younger brother, Charlie, didn't play football. Why try? Who could ever live up to his older brother's greatness? Charlie would languish in Bill's shadow. It seemed easier not even to make the effort.

However, a wise football coach named Lee Stone went to Charlie and said, "Son, I think you have the speed and skills to play this game. Why don't you try out for the team?" After some cajoling and encouraging, the coach convinced the reticent younger brother to give it a shot. The rest is history. Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice went on to become an All-American at the University of North Carolina and one of the leading rushers and scorers in the history of the Washington Redskins.

God is still in the business of doing what seems most unlikely. Paul reminded his readers that not many of them were wise, or powerful, or even wealthy in the world's eyes (1 Cor. 1:26). Nevertheless, the Lord redeemed them for His glory.

Who is to say what God can do with unlikely folks if He so chooses?
Although our dreams may seem foolish to the world (v. 27), in God's hands they can become tomorrow's realities. Don't give up on yourself or on God's power to make something exciting of your life (v. 28).
