Now, my son, listen to me. Do exactly as I tell you. Genesis 27:8

Sometimes it seems as if God purposely sets up obstacles to fulfilling His promises so He then can overcome them and build His people’s faith.

Like Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah were childless—a problem when you’re supposed to be the parents of “many nations.” Unlike Abraham and Sarah, Isaac prayed about their difficulty, and God allowed Rebekah to conceive.

Just as God gave Sarah the promise that she would have a son, so He gave a promise to Rebekah. This time, God promised that her youngest son would not only father a nation, but also rule over his brother. When it came to seeing that promise fulfilled, however, Rebekah became desperate and fell into the same trap that Sarah had fallen into.

The day for Isaac to bless his sons approached. These blessings were not “good luck” wishes but in a real sense would predict the destinies of the two sons. To ensure the right outcome, Rebekah used deceit in an attempt to gain what God had promised.

Rebekah believed God, but not enough to wait for Him to overcome what looked impossible. In contrast, you don’t need to become desperate when God’s methods and timing don’t meet your expectations.

You can rest assured that God’s promises will come true.

Prayer: Lord, transform me. Unlike Rebekah, I do not attempt to obtain Your blessings through my own schemes.
