After this presentation to Israel's leaders, Moses and Aaron went and spoke to Pharaoh. They told him, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Let my people go so they may hold a festival in my honor in the wilderness." Exodus 5:1 NLT

What did it feel like for Moses to reenter the palaces of Egypt after a forty-year absence? These halls had once been his home. He practically owned them. But now he approached the new Pharaoh as a stranger with a wild demand: “Release the Israelites to go and worship their God.”

As a brash young prince of Egypt, Moses first attempted to use his own strength and position to identify with his people and bring them justice. As a seasoned old man, he first argued with God, then gave himself completely to the Lord. From that point on, his identity was as the friend of God (Exodus 33:17). None of the splendors of Egypt could ever capture his heart or eye again (Hebrews 3:5).

Like Moses, you live in an era of spectacular culture and extravagant resources. Worldly possessions and praise actively seek your attention and affection. But all your attention and affection belong to the Lord God. As you openly identify with Him, you will find that no coast is too great in order to gain God’s friendship.

Prayer: Lord, transform me. Like Moses, I want to value my relationship with You far more than any temporal possession of fame.
