Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my grandfather Abraham, and God of my father, Isaac--O LORD, you told me, 'Return to your own land and to your relatives.' And you promised me, 'I will treat you kindly.' I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps! Genesis 32:9-10
Maybe Jacob was originally from Missouri, the “Show Me” state. Raised to be the recipient of God’s promises to Abraham and Isaac, Jacob wanted to see for himself that the Lord was at work in his life.
As a young man, he slept on a pillow of stone and dreamed of a stairway to heaven. When he awoke, he realized God’s presence with him. Jacob responded by declaring that he would follow the Lord if God would show Himself faithful and bring Jacob back safely from a foreign land.
The Lord did bless Jacob and brought him back with tents bursting with children, and large flocks and herds grazing under the care of many servants. Jacob knew God had more than proven Himself, and he was prepared to worship Him alone. As always, the Lord gave His blessing and more.
One night, God came to test Jacob’s true desires. After doing so, He changed his name from “Jacob, one who schemes” to “Israel, one who struggles with God.”
Like Jacob, you can cling to the Lord, knowing that in Him alone you will find life and blessing.
Prayer: Lord, transform me. Like Jacob, I want to pursue Your blessings and always recognize Your hand on my life.
