Grace and Peace.

I can't remember ever coming across any sermon explaining the significance of these verses and if Today we must apply it. Please explain who they are talking about and if this exist today. Everything should be done in context so please don't be afraid if you want to put the whole chapter for reading purposes and help with your explanation.
These Two stood out for me. Also how are we to know if such synagogue exist ? Are we to take it literal ?

Thank you.

Rev 2: 8-10
8 “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Smyrna. This is the message from the one who is the First and the Last, who was dead but is now alive:
9 “I know about your suffering and your poverty—but you are rich! I know the blasphemy of those opposing you. They say they are Jews, but they are not, because their synagogue belongs to Satan. 10 Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.

Revelation 3:8-9
8 “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. 9 Look, I will force those who belong to Satan’s synagogue—those liars who say they are Jews but are not—to come and bow down at your feet. They will acknowledge that you are the ones I love.

I personally believe every church in the world is one of those 7 churches. Hopefully your church is like Philadelphia or Smyrna. Obviously there are people who claim to be Jews, even today this happens.

The Seven Churches......

The Letter that John penned to the Seven Churches were for those located in Asia Minor (Modern Day Turkey) These Churches have long since vanished.

The Inclusion of the letters to the Churches in Revelation were not by mistake.

2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The term "Falling Away" is the Greek for Apostasy, or Mass deflection from the Truth. (**It does not denote the taking of anyone**)

This event must occur before the Son of perdition can be revealed.
Those letters were included to also warn the Church World that is today, even though it's spread out way past the Original seven.

The Presbyterian, Lutheran, United Methodist all major church bodies have allowed or voted to allow Gay Pastors and clergy to run the things of God. We are talking about millions that have fled the truth, and this is not counting all those that have allowed other sexual sin to be rampant in the Churches.

There is some future prophetic utterance by Jesus such as Escape the hour of tribulation (Trial, Temptation) that shall come on the whole earth. That event has not yet occurred, even though it was given to ancient churches that have long since been gone.

You can see a map here.

OK, rizen1: generally these 7 letters are dictated to John who writes as a secretary here taking down the words that the Glorious Christ of ch.1 tells him to write. Our LORD follows a pattern in each of them. In the 1st part there is a reference to some aspect of His character that introduces the personal capacity that Christ is addressing them in. Next there is some kind of recognition given to their present estate, commendation and/or reprimand. Thirdly, there are recommendations and warnings; followed by promises for overcoming (so I take it that there is a struggle laying behind each of these addresses for each of the individual assemblies). These conflicts are the prototypical struggles of all assemblies, at all times, in the battle zone of this life (as indicated by B-A-C). And then fifthly, there is an invitation to all assemblies to hear what the Spirit says to each one of them: ch3: "22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches." Thus showing each letter's relevance for all churches, the original 7, and all others as well.

Referring back to chapter 1, you have a visual picture of Christ walking amidst His assemblies; He walks in such a way today, never neutral to our affairs, but always in His purity commending , reproving, pointing out, warning, comforting, and promising retribution or reward. The temporal affairs of His assemblies are reflections of His glory one way or the other. He brings them into existence and He can take them out; churching together is a very serious thing; His name is at stake.

As to "synagogue of Satan" it is not mysterious language; it is simple descriptive language. Everyone knows what a synagogue is: our LORD taught in them; Paul sought them out in his travels as the first place to start his proclamation of the gospel; in Corinth, as the synagogue hardened to the cross of Christ, members were thrown out and formed the assembly there, "the church of Corinth"; there was also a synagogue in Ephesus before the believers, both Jew and Gentile, were separated; if the city had no synagogue, as in Philippi, Jews and proselytes met at a convenient water course: "Acts 16:13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither." Now this last is a rudimentary synagogue, according to tradition it took 10 members. When in history a synagogue became the enemy of the cross of Christ and adopted the rule that as to Jesus of Nazareth: God has not come in the flesh and thus denying the Son of God, then at that time they became a synagogue of Satan. Antichrist and the spirit of antichrist at that time was already in the world: 1Jn.2:18 "Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time." And the test, a few verses later was: "22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also." This is the same way our LORD spoke to the temple and synagogue religious leaders when He was in their cities: Jn.8:43 "Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."

So, it is apparent that at this time in history these synagogues had so ruled. The one in Philadelphia, however would be brought to realize the truth: that God was with the small despised assembly that honored Christ name and kept His word; there would be a struggle in their evangelism however, but they had an open door no one could shut. "7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. 9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. 10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. 12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. 13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches." This particular synagogue of Satan would have it gates blown away by the preached gospel and its prisoners freed.

I hope this helps some; it is a straight forward interpretation, not at all a novel one. And I do think it is the most simple and obvious.

I believe all of the letters are relevant, especially at the close of the age. Look at the context, it was the preface to the prophecy of the end of the age and the coming revelation of our Lord and King Jesus.

In terms of the "Synagogue of Satan" that Jesus refers to, well, I've had a number of ideas over the past couple years. Here is what I've come to understand:

Jesus may not necessarily be speaking of the physical bloodline of the nation of Israel when He says "Jew," but about the church which have been circumcised spiritually:

Romans 2:28-29

28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Consider also that in this end of the age the apostasy that Paul speaks of is in full-swing. There are billions of people on the face of the earth today that claim to be "Christians," or in more Biblical terms, "Jews."

More specifically, there are 1 billion people who subscribe to the teachings of the Catholic church. The Catholic church, if we look closely at Matthew 23, parallels the many traditions of man the original Synagogue of Satan made up of the original Jewish faith. Ironically enough, the Catholic church also has its early roots in the 1st century church.

It seems Satan has played the same song over and over in order to infiltrate God's church whether it was before our Lord was born, or after He had ascended to the right hand of the throne of our Father.

Anyhow, just some thoughts and ideas I've had on the matter. Seek the Lord for all wisdom, as all wisdom and knowledge are found in Christ.

Ok back again I realize one point was not made, or maybe it was but got lost in the letter. I've been asking this question for some time now, not because I don't know but I wanted to see what would be said concerning the synagogue of Satan.

Is the fear of being portrayed as anti-Semitic the root to how the church interpret the synagogue of Satan verse ?

When or who decides a verse is to be interpreted as Metaphor or taken literal? What are the rules and when can a word just be a word ? Why in this particular verse " Jew" is not really Jew ?

This question pop more in my head after watching a Christian network and the pastor said the Christian church is curse for not giving to israel, we are curse the way we treat Jews badly and for trying to steal their birth right.
I don't know what sort of fear tactic this pastor is using, because if not all but most of the churches I know have a israel ministry. I must admit not any of these ministries practice teaching them Jesus or talking about salvation, mainly just supporting them.

Is there a fear when it comes to talking about the Jews ?
Does this fear play a part in our interpretation of the bible ?

If I was to ask the same question to Jews they'd agree that yes there's impostors.

those were not churches as in buildings or denominations. they were cities in what we know now as turkey. however i do believe that it is written to all churches and people claiming to be the church.

rizen1 asked:

I never really considered that before but my immediate response(without research, prayer and contemplation") would have to be yes.
What gets me is that Gentiles were never required to obey the law of the Jews. They were already under the covenant of Noah. They could never be Jews so they did not qualify for the Mosaic covenant.

Good point and considering the context it would seem that it literally means Jew.However it does show a pattern that the deceiver uses even today.

The Jews were fond of calling themselves the Assembly or synagogue of God. John turns this around and puts it in a more accurate perspective. The Jews were extremely anti Christian in those days and did everything in their power to destroy the existence and message of the Church.

Maybe taking a look at the historical aspect of Smyrna will help Rizen1.
Here's some ineresting stuff I've studied with.

History teaches that Smyrna was a city deeply committed to idolatry and the worship of the Roman Emperor. On one famous street in Smyrna, called the “Golden Street,” stood magnificent temples to Cybele, Apollo, Asklepios, Aphrodite, and a great temple to Zeus. But the worship of those pagan gods was dying out. The real focus was on the worship of the Roman Emperor.

In 196 b.c. Smyrna built the first temple to Dea Roma - the goddess of Rome, the spiritual symbol of the Roman Empire. Once the “spirit” of Rome was worshipped, it wasn’t much of a step to worship the dead Emperors of Rome. Then it was only another small step to worship the living Emperors, and then to demand such worship as a evidence of political allegiance and civic pride.

In 23 a.d. Smyrna won the privilege (over 11 other cities) to build the first temple to worship the Emperor Tiberius Caesar. Smyrna was a

Emperor worship had begin as spontaneous demonstration of gratitude to Rome; but toward the end of the first century, in the days of Domitian, the final step was taken and Caesar worship became compulsory. Once a year the Roman citizen must burn a pinch of incense on the altar to the godhead of Caesar; and having done so, he was given a certificate to guarantee that he had performed his religious duty.

"All that the Christians had to do was to burn that pinch of incense, say, ‘Caesar is Lord,’ receive their certificate, and go away and worship as they pleased. But that is precisely what the Christians would not do. They would give no man the name of Lord; that name they would keep for Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone. They would not even formally conform.” (Barclay)

The Christians of Smyrna knew poverty because they were robbed and fired from jobs in persecution for the gospel. (Hebrews 10:34). This kind of economic persecution was one important reason why Christians were poor in Smyrna.

Historically, we are told there was a large and hostile community of Jews in Smyrna. But this tells us that a true Jew is one who trusts God and believes in Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:3). Others may be Jews ethnically - which still has its place before God - but they are not Jews spiritually before God.

I pray this helps. I have more on verses 9 and 10.

Rev 2:9

Reference to the Jews; These were physically Jews, but not true Jews spiritually but rather pagan (Romans 2:28). They allied with other pagans in putting Christians to death as they attempted to stamp out the Christian faith.

Synagogue of Satan; with the rejection of the messiah, Judaism becomes as much a tool of Satan as emperor worship.

the only problem with this is that the words were spoken to the church. not to the whole city. granted the church was probably doing what many churches are doing now in america, forming to the society they live in rather than the word of god and who christ is.

A very rare and accurate historical post. Thank you.

A good friend of mine wrote a commentary on the book of Revelation; below is a part of his introduction to chapter 2 and 3. He follows this with more detail of each individual church which I can post if you like.

The messages to the Seven Churches applied to the actual churches of Johns day and also to seven successive periods from the time of the early church till the Second Coming.

“The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in different periods of the Christian Era. The number 7 indicates completeness, and is symbolic of the fact that the message extends to the end of time, while the symbol used reveals the condition of the church at different periods in the history of the world.”

WHAT WE WILL LEARN

(a) Christ cares for ALL His church past, present and future, collectively and individually.

(b) The messages to the seven churches are applicable in various ways:

1. To the original congregations of John’ day

2. To us personally. Your condition will be seen in one or more of the descriptions.

3. To the history of the church as a whole throughout seven successive periods in the Christian Era.

The seven churches are mentioned in the order they appear on a road which passed through Asia Minor. This indicates that they are sequential like the sequentially numbered seals, trumpets and plagues.

What shows that the messages apply to seven periods of church as a whole from Christ’s first to Second Advents?

1. The fact that the messages are addressed to “He who has an ear, let him hear...” indicates that the messages are relevant to more than the local congregations of John’s time.

2. The number 7 indicates completeness (7 eyes, 7 spirits, seven seals etc.), and is symbolic of the fact that these seven messages describe the complete history of the Christian church.

3. Christ is depicted as tending to just these seven churches and holding as precious in His hand their ministers, but as Christ tends to all His churches of all time, evidently these seven represent all and are symbolic of the condition of the church as a whole throughout seven successive periods extending from Christ’s first Advent to His Second.

4. The seven churches were not all the churches in Asia minor, there was also Colossae, Hierapolis (Col 1:2; 4:13), Miletus, and Troas. The seven were apparently selected as being representative of the whole church.

5. The meanings of the church names, the messages themselves, and the details within (e.g. Balaam, Balac, Jezebel etc.) give a wonderful summary of the successive phases of church history.

6. It is unlikely that a period of just ten literal days of persecution on literal Smyrna would be worthy of mentioning in prophecy (Rev 2:10) especially when there were longer and greater persecutions. However its inclusion would be justified if it also symbolized the 10 worst years of persecution on the church as a whole during the historical period symbolized by Smyrna. Note: Days symbolize years (Eze 4:6; Num 14:34).

7. As Christ’s great prophecy (Matt 24; Mark 13; Luke 21) begins in apostolic times and spans history to the Second coming, it is probable that the Revelation given to John covers the same ground.

8. The whole book of Revelation was sent to the seven churches (Rev 22:16). As the contents covers monumental events throughout the whole Christian era the churches evidently cover periods throughout the Christian era.

To the angel of...

Each message is addressed to “the angel” of the seven churches. Angel, Gr. ‘Aggeloi means “messenger,” whether celestial or human. Aggeloi has been used to refer to humans (Mark 1:2; Luke 7:24; 9:52; James 2:25). As it is doubtful that God would give a message to heavenly angels through John these angels apparently refer to the faithful messengers or ministers of the churches.

The Seven Churches.

Ephesus means 'desirable'. This church is representative of the apostolic age of God's people. Doctrinally pure and sound, testing false peophets, and hating sin. Nevertheless, by the time of this letter, had lost her first love. If our present love for God today is less than when we first met Him, we ought to repent. Hence why our Lord asks us to "take up our cross daily and follow Him". The time generally considered for the apostolic age would be from Christ's ascension to the death of the last apostle around 100ad.

Smyna That the Lord addresses Himself or identifies Himself under one of the appellations of the Almighty, the First and Last, and that although He died but is now alive is a great encouragement to a church suffering under persecution. A previous post mentioned the persecutions at Smyna explaining the source, and an accurate picture it was. It is because of the promise and proof of God's resurrection power that God's people were willing to die for their faith.'Smyna' is by definition 'myrhh'; a sweet smelling worthy sacrifice to God. Although materially poor, they were spiritually wealthy. Here is also introduced the beginning of what paul described as the 'mystery of iniquity', and here described as the synagogue of Satan. Apostasy in any and in all its forms is Satanic.
The ten days of tribulation here mentioned are a prophetic term for ten years of intense and most violent persecution under Diocletion which came to an end with the 'nominal' conversion of Constantine in 323ad. Thus this church age was from 100 to 323ad.

Pergamos. Means height or elevation. Here began a time of great danger to the church, even greater than that which was inflicted under persecution. Persecution brought physical danger, but this church age brought spiritual danger. It was during this time that the foundations of the papacy were being laid. Where material comfort, and pleasing compromise and popularity tempted the followers of Jesus. Persecution had ceased, Christianity was fast becoming the "in thing" both politically and socially. Many fell away from the truth, but those who had survived the persecutions and held firm in the face of weorldliness must surely be at the 'height' of their faith. 'Antipas' is a combination of two Greek words, 'anti' and papas' or pope.
Satan's seat. Yes, here in Rome was the centre of his operations to destroy Christianity, first through paganism and now through Roman Catholicism. The age of this church would be naturally from the time of Connstantine (323)to the time of the establishment of the papacy in 538ad.

Thyatira. Remember, that these letters are being written to the true followers of Jesus. They do not apply to the apostate church. God only ministers in this fashion, chastening and rebuking, to His own children. Thyatira means 'sweet savour of labour' or 'sacrifice of contrition'. This church age fits naturally into the entire period of papal apostasy and persecuting power. As the papacy rose and became politically aligned with the kings of the world thus committing spiritual adultery. What the papacy sought illegally, worldly governance and power, Jesus will give His faithful followers as a gift. The papacy came to full autonomous power when the Ostrogoths were ousted from Rome in 538 ad. They were the third of the 3 horns which were plucked up to make way for the rule of the little horn (see Daniel 7). Exactly 1260 years later, in 1798, General Berthier of Napoleon's revolutionary army, entered Rome and took the pope captive, disbanded the college of cardinals, and declared the papal states a republic. The world considered the papacy finished.
In his book, "The Modern Papacy", J Rickaby SJ (a Jesuit priest) wrote:
"Berthier entered Rome on 10/2/1798 and proclaimed a republic....no wonder that half of Europe thought the papacy was dead." He goes on to say; "the papacy was extinct and not a vestige of its existence remained...its bishop was dying a captive in a foreign land and the decree was already announced that no successor would be allowed in his place." The beast had received its deadly head wound. (Revel. 13:10) It was not until 1928 that the Vatican was once again permitted civil autonomous rule and declared a sovereign state once again by Mussolini. The deadly wound was being healed, and note how today all the world wonders after her.
Notice also the letter mentions God's judgement of Jezebels children.Later in Revelation Babylon the Great is mentioned, the "mother of harlots". "All the churches shall know that I am He which seacheth the reins and the hearts". All the churches in this context means both apostate and true. Yes, the papacy has children. And what are those children doing today? Are they not returning to their "mother church" through ecumenism? Hundreds of Anglican or Episcopalian bishops have signed their allegiance to Rome under a new protcol which allows them to remain in their former church under the same name but in subjection to papal authority. "But unto the rest (remnant) in Thyatira who have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put you under no other burden. But that which ye have , hold fast till I come. Here is the first church of the last days.
It was about this time, late 18th century and early 19th century, that Biblical prophecy relating to the second coming began to be promulgated throughout the world. this time was the beginning of what we now know as the "last days".
Sardis. Means 'that which remains". Here in this letter is the church described as the 'remnant' church of Revelation 12:17. and the continuing of the faithful end-time people of the previous age, for here in this letter also is mention made of the second coming. It was this church which worldwide was brought much knowledge and insight into prophecy, but despite a good reputation, was spiritually dead. Only a few names. 'a remnant', were found worthy. Here also is mentioned for the first time the Book of Life, which suggests judgement.

Will continue later.

An alternative understanding from the above reduces the church era of Sardis from the establishment of the papacy in the 6th century to the reformation period around 1500.

v 1-6 SARDIS. Era of Reformation ~ 1517s - mid 1700s

Meaning

The meaning of Sardis is uncertain. Some suggest “THAT WHICH REMAINS,” “song of joy,” or “SOMETHING NEW.” The city of Sardis was built at a height of 1500 feet above steep crumbling rock cliffs and appeared impregnable. There was only one entrance into the city which could be easily guarded. However twice in 549BC and 213BC the city fell because the watchmen were not watching. How appropriate are verses 2-3, “If therefore thou shalt not watch...”

Prophetic Period

Sardis represents the period of the Reformation ~ 1517 - mid 1700s. This was the time when the Lutherans, Anglicans, Reformed (Calvinists) and others separated from the Roman Catholic Church. “A name that thou livest, and art dead.” The name Protestant implied opposition to the abuses, errors and formalism of the Roman Catholic church, and Reformation implied that none of those faults were to be found in the Protestant bodies. Sadly this wasn’t the case. Divisions arose over doctrines such as Sacramentalism, Predestination, Original sin, Forensic Justification, Once saved always saved and Antinomianism. Doctrinal Creeds were enforced by the State and many, such as the Presbyterians, Baptists, and Quakers, were persecuted. Some good did remain (v 2), but zeal and holiness faded. Christ warned those of this period to be ready for the coming hour of judgment when the books would be investigated and the names of the unprepared blotted out.

v 1 Christ’s Self-Introduction

To those needing the holy Spirit Christ comes as “He that hath the seven spirits of God (the holy spirit Rev 4:5; Zec 4:10) and the seven stars (the ministers. See on Rev 1:20).

Approval

None except in v 4.

v 1-4 Criticism

“A name that thou livest, and art dead.” “Protestant Reformation” no longer protesting, no longer reforming, Christian in name only. Some truth remained and needed strengthening. Remember how the truth had come and repent. Most were morally defiled (Jude 23). The faithful few that lived up to the truth they had and will walk with Christ. These faithful saints prepared the way for the revival that occurred under the following Philadelphian period.

v 5-6 Reward

None but those who overcome will wear white (See Zech 3:4,5). Those who do not overcome have their names blotted out of the book of life (Ps 69:28; Ex 32:32; Ps 109:13-14; Deut 9:14; 29:20). Evidently being once saved does not necessarily mean being always saved (2Pet 2:20-22; Ez 3:20; 1Cor 9:27). The books are opened in the judgment. (See Dan 7:10). If their name is not blotted out the record of their sins will be (Acts 3:19).

Philadelphia
Meaning

Philadelphia means “brotherly love,” a name given by King Attallus II of Pergamum in memory of his older brother. This small city experienced frequent earthquakes and was rebuilt after being almost totally destroyed in AD17. Some claim that a lone column remained standing till the 18th century. How appropriate that the overcomer will be, “a pillar in the temple of God,” (v 12). Philadelphia was also located at the entrance of the beautiful and fertile valley of Hermus making appropriate the words, “I have set before thee an open door.”

Prophetic Period

Philadelphia means brotherly love and well represents the church in the latter years of the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries. In this period the great Revivals restored the spirit of brotherly love and practical godliness. It is difficult to measure just how much the church of this time blessed the English speaking world, and through them the wider world. They contributed to the abolition of slavery, called for temperance, attacked gambling, produced many of the great hymns, improved working conditions, began free medical care, inspired philanthropy, humanitarian and missionary work including the British Bible society in 1804. The Evangelical Revival prepared the way for the Great Worldwide Second Advent Movement of the 1830s-1840s.

Not all churches joined the second advent movement. In fact, many opposed it, condemning it as fanaticism or deception. What history reveal is very interesting, in that those churches which did oppose the second advent movement fell into great declension. For many years Christian commentators, and pastors, bot in the churches and in the press, decried the sad state of the church in those years, and were at a loss as to explain why. Membership and active participation in services, mission work, charity, and other aspects of religious duty died. Yet they continued to criticise those who were repenting of sin, praying and studying the scriptures daily, in anticipation of the second coming. It was in the second advent movement that the Holy Spirit was ministering.
Highly pertinent is verse 9.

Just an additional comment on the church of Ephesus. They laboured for Christ, tested false teachers, defended the true faith, and resisted the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which claimed that the gospel released believers from the obligation of being doers of the law. Sadly in contending for the faith which does not make void the law (Rom 3:31), the Ephesians lost the love by which alone the law can be kept. Though the church may fail Christ has not lost His first love for His bride the church (Eph 5:27).
The doctrine of the Nicolaitans is not entirely lost.
Christ hates the doctrine of the Nicolaitans. Christ hates iniquity (Heb 1:9) so evidently the doctrine of the Nicolaitans breeds iniquity. Irenaeus and other ancient writers spoke of the Nicolaitans believers as leading lives of unrestrained indulgence.

The doctrine is now largely taught that the gospel of Christ has made the law of God of no effect; that by "believing" we are released from the necessity of being doers of the Word, or released from the necessity of obedience to Gods law. But this is the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which Christ so unsparingly condemned.” (cf. Rom 6:1-2; Jm 1:22).
