Angels.

Have you ever wondered about angels? What do they look like? How many are there?
Do they really look like little naked babies with wings on them? Are any of them female?

Angels are mentioned in at least 34 books of the Bible.
The word 'angel' occurs in 194 verses, the plural word 'angels' is in 92 verses (King James)
Jesus speaks of angels in several places. (Matt 18:10; Matt 26:53; Matt 13:41; Matt 24:31; Mark 8:38; Mark 13:32, etc...)

Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
It would seem that angels are created beings from the verse above.
Job 38:4-7 speaks of beings (sons of God) that existed before the creation of the earth.
Jude 1:6 says the angels have an abode or domain that they dwell in.
Heb 1:13-14 says they can be ministering 'spirits'.

All verses about angels in the Bible denote masculinity which the possible exception of Zec 5:9
(We don't know for sure if these are angels)

It appears angels do not die.
Luke 20:36 for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
There are myriads of angels (some versions say 'without number') so it appears there are a lot of them.
Heb 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels,

Jude 1:9 says there is an archangel named Michael. In Daniel 10:13 he is called a chief prince.
(also see Dan 10:21; Dan 12:1; Rev 12:7)
Another angel named Gabriel is mentioned a few places (Dan 8:16; Dan 9:21; Luke 1:19; Luke 1:26)
Some say a third angel is named Peniel (Gen 32:30) but some say that was just the name of the place where Jacob wrestled an angel.
1 Cor 4:9 For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.
It seems some angels watch what we do.

The first time we hear of an angel is in Gen 3.
Gen 3:24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.

Ezkiel 1 is generally considered to be a description of them.
Eze 1:4 As I looked, behold, a storm wind was coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually and a bright light around it, and in its midst something like glowing metal in the midst of the fire.
Eze 1:5 Within it there were figures resembling four living beings. And this was their appearance: they had human form.
Eze 1:6 Each of them had four faces and four wings.
Eze 1:7 Their legs were straight and their feet were like a calf's hoof, and they gleamed like burnished bronze.
Eze 1:8 Under their wings on their four sides were human hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them,
Eze 1:9 their wings touched one another; their faces did not turn when they moved, each went straight forward.
Eze 1:10 As for the form of their faces, each had the face of a man; all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and all four had the face of an eagle.
Eze 1:11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies.
Eze 1:12 And each went straight forward; wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go, without turning as they went.
Eze 1:13 In the midst of the living beings there was something that looked like burning coals of fire, like torches darting back and forth among the living beings. The fire was bright, and lightning was flashing from the fire.
Eze 1:14 And the living beings ran to and fro like bolts of lightning.
Eze 1:15 Now as I looked at the living beings, behold, there was one wheel on the earth beside the living beings, for each of the four of them.
Eze 1:16 The appearance of the wheels and their workmanship was like sparkling beryl, and all four of them had the same form, their appearance and workmanship being as if one wheel were within another.
Eze 1:17 Whenever they moved, they moved in any of their four directions without turning as they moved.
Eze 1:18 As for their rims they were lofty and awesome, and the rims of all four of them were full of eyes round about.
Eze 1:19 Whenever the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them. And whenever the living beings rose from the earth, the wheels rose also.
Eze 1:20 Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction. And the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings was in the wheels.
Eze 1:21 Whenever those went, these went; and whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the earth, the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings was in the wheels.
Eze 1:22 Now over the heads of the living beings there was something like an expanse, like the awesome gleam of crystal, spread out over their heads.
Eze 1:23 Under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward the other; each one also had two wings covering its body on the one side and on the other.
Eze 1:24 I also heard the sound of their wings like the sound of abundant waters as they went, like the voice of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.
Eze 3:13 And I heard the sound of the wings of the living beings touching one another and the sound of the wheels beside them, even a great rumbling sound.

We don't really have a description of them here, other than they have faces and wings, but they are on the ark of the covenant.
Exo 25:18 "You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat.
Exo 25:19 "Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends.
Exo 25:20 "The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat.
Exo 37:7 He made two cherubim of gold; he made them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat;
Exo 37:8 one cherub at the one end and one cherub at the other end; he made the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at the two ends.
Exo 37:9 The cherubim had their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces toward each other; the faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat.

Another description, indicating that possibly sarphim look different from cherubim?
Isa 6:1 In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.
Isa 6:2 Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
Isa 6:3 And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory."
Isa 6:4 And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke.
Isa 6:5 Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."
Isa 6:6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs.

Eze 10:1 Then I looked, and behold, in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a throne, appeared above them.
Eze 10:2 And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, "Enter between the whirling wheels under the cherubim and fill your hands with coals of fire from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city." And he entered in my sight.
Eze 10:3 Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the temple when the man entered, and the cloud filled the inner court.
Eze 10:4 Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub to the threshold of the temple, and the temple was filled with the cloud and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD.
Eze 10:5 Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.
Eze 10:6 It came about when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, "Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim," he entered and stood beside a wheel.
Eze 10:7 Then the cherub stretched out his hand from between the cherubim to the fire which was between the cherubim, took some and put it into the hands of the one clothed in linen, who took it and went out.
Eze 10:8 The cherubim appeared to have the form of a man's hand under their wings.
Eze 10:9 Then I looked, and behold, four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a Tarshish stone.

Eze 10:20 These are the living beings that I saw beneath the God of Israel by the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim.
Eze 10:21 Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the form of human hands.
Eze 10:22 As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.

In Revelation 4 we see beings similar to the descriptions in Ezekiel and Isaih.
Rev 4:6 and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind.
Rev 4:7 The first creature was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle.
Rev 4:8 And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and
day and night they do not cease to say, "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME."
Rev 4:9 And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever,

A common prayer among Christians is that God will protect someone traveling by putting angels around them. This is possibly from the verses below.
Gen 24:40 "He said to me, 'The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you to make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father's house;

Exo 23:20 "Behold, I am going to send an angel before you to guard you along the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.

Angels can become visible or invisible depending on circumstances.
Numbers 22:22-31; Judges 6:21

It appears that angels can also appear to look like normal men.
Jdg 13:16 The angel of the LORD said to Manoah, "Though you detain me, I will not eat your food, but if you prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the LORD." For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the LORD.
Jdg 13:17 Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "What is your name, so that when your words come to pass, we may honor you?"

Angels can physically touch us.
1 Kin 19:5 He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, "Arise, eat."
1 Kin 19:7 The angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you." (Also Gen 19:10)

Angels are very powerful beings.
Isa 37:36 Then the angel of the LORD went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, all of these were dead.
2 Pet 2:11 whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord.

An angel rolled away the stone on Jesus' tomb.
Mat 28:2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it.

Some say, things they might think are natural occurrences, like the blowing of a breeze, are really caused by a angel.
John 5:4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.]

Amazingly enough, some people believe we become angels when we die.
In a popular Christmas movie (It's a Wonderful Life) angels start off as apprentices of a sort and it they do a good deed, they get their wings.

What do angels look like?

Have you ever wondered about angels? What do they look like? How many are there?
Do they really look like little naked babies with wings on them? Are any of them female?

Several years ago, I was among a group worshiping in a really anointed meeting when I looked up and saw an angel.

I was so shocked that I can't really remember much to describe him. Despite being fairly close he was not altogether clear, but seemed to be clothed in bright white robes which were a bit translucent. He was among the musicians sitting behind the lady who was playing the keyboard. He had an instrument on his knees which he was playing. I am no musician, but I recall that the instrument seemed rectangular with strings on it.

After the meeting I was speaking to the lady in her home about what I had seen.
She told me that as she was playing that evening, she became aware that she could hear sounds other than her own keyboard or the drums and guitars. She was puzzled so whilst she continued playing, she reduced the sustain on the keyboard right down to try to identify the nature of the sound. She then lifted her hands right off the keys and into the air above her head, and to her surprise the music continued. She then suddenly turned around on her seat and saw the angel who was sitting right behind her, playing the instrument on his knee.

Very cool Francis. My son-in-law was a while back a member of a singing group, There were three of them and they often sang a-cappella. They were recording themselves one day to listen how well they were coping with one particular three part harmony, and when they played the recording there were four parts being sung.
This should not be at all a surprise to Christians. Angels are our constant companions. I have seen them on several occasions, both good and evil. "Are they not ministering spirits sent to minister to those who are heirs to salvation?" So we really should expect them to be around, especially in times of danger. I think we all may be surprised at how many times our lives were saved, or serious injury prevented, by the work of angels in our midst.

Satan
I include him here because I believe him to be a (fallen) angel.

The existence of Satan is mentioned in seven OT books and in every NT book.
Jesus mentioned Satan several places ( Matt 4:10; Matt 12:26; Matt 16:23; Mark 3:36; Mark 4:15; Luke 10:18; Luke 11:18; Acts 26:18 etc... )

Most Bible scholars say he has many names. Some believe are of these names are not the same individual.
Satan is mentioned in the verses above.
The word devil is mentioned 34 times in the NT. Matt 4:1-11; Mat 13:39; Matt 25:41; Joh 8:44; John 13:2 etc...)
The word devil means slanderer.
Lucifer is mentioned in Isa 14:12 in the King James.
Lucifer means day-star. Some versions say morning star or star of the morning.
In Rev 22:16 Jesus calls himself the morning star, some religions believe because of this he is also Satan, or at
the very least Jesus is only angel. ( more about all the verses that say this isn't true later )
Beelzebub is mentioned in Matt 10:25; Matt 12:24; Matt 12:27; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15-19 .
Belial is mentioned over a dozen times in the OT ( Deut 13:13; 1 Sam 10:27, etc... )and also 2 Cor 6:15 .

Satan also has many titles. Again, there is some controversy over whether this is all the same being or not.

Tempter 1 Thes 3:5
Prince of this world John 12:31
God of this world 2 Cor 4:4
Ruler ( some versions say 'prince' ) of the kingdom of the air Eph 2:2
Accuser of the brethren Rev 12:10

He is also represented in a few different ways.
A serpent Rev 12:9; Gen 3:1-14
A dragon Rev 12:3-17; Rev 13:1-4; Rev 20:2
A angel of light 2 Cor 11:14
possibly others also.

Most scholars consider Ezekiel 28:2-19 to parellelism.
It is talking about someone called the King of Tyre here.
But it is also likely talking about Satan here.

At the very least there are many similarities between the two.
Eze 28:2 verse two it says he but a man, and he isn't a God.
Eze 28:8 verse eight, he will be taken down to the pit. (Rev 20:2-3)
Eze 28:8 eight also says he will die like those in the sea. (Rev 20:10)
Eze 28:9 nine repeats that he is but a man not a God.
Eze 28:13 thirteen says he was in the garden of Eden. (Gen 3:1-14)
Eze 28:14 fourteen says he was a cherub, or angel.
It's very unlikely that a human would be called a cherub.
Most scholars put the writing of Ezekiel at somewhere about 595-570 BC. If this being was in the garden of Eden,

this would make him several thousand years old, easily the oldest human ever.
Eze 28:15 fifteen says this being was created.
Eze 28:16 sixteen says he was cast down from 'God's mountain'. (Luke 10:18)
Eze 28:16 sixteen calls this person a cherub again.
Eze 28:17 says he was cast to the ground (Luke 10:18)

Eze 28:6 says his sin was trying to make himself like God. (Isa 14:13)
Eze 28:9 says he called himself a God. (Isa 14:14)
Eze 28:16 says he sinned and was filled with violence.

Eph 6:11-12 says Satan is a spiritual being.
The Bible says some can be held captive by his will.
2 Tim 2:26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by

him to do his will. However Christians have the power to resist him (James 4:7)

He is called a murderer John 8:44
A liar John 8:44
A sinner 1 John 3:8
An accuser Rev 12:10
An adversary 1 Pet 5:8

We see in the book of Job, that Satan can't do anything without God's permission.
Job 1:12; Job 2:6

Another passage that is generally considered to be'the sin of Satan'.
Isa 14:12 "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!
Isa 14:13 "But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north.
Isa 14:14 'I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'
Isa 14:15 "Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.
Isa 14:16 "Those who see you will gaze at you, They will ponder over you, saying, 'Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,
Isa 14:17 Who made the world like a wilderness And overthrew its cities, Who did not allow his prisoners to go home?'
Isa 14:18 "All the kings of the nations lie in glory, Each in his own tomb.
Isa 14:19 "But you have been cast out of your tomb Like a rejected branch, Clothed with the slain who are pierced with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit Like a trampled corpse.
Isa 14:20 "You will not be united with them in burial, Because you have ruined your country, You have slain your people. May the offspring of evildoers not be mentioned forever.

..this getting a bit long, but there is a lot more to say about Satan.

Why Jesus isn't an angel.

This may seem obvious to most of us, but it has come up a few times here on TJ, so I thought this might be a good place to discuss it.

First Jesus is the ONLY begotten Son of God.
John 1:14; John 1:18; John 3:16; John 3:18; 1 Jn 4:9

We have a comparison between Jesus and the angels in Hebrews 1.

Heb 1:1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,
Heb 1:2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
Heb 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Heb 1:4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.
Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, "I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"?
Heb 1:6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM."
Heb 1:7 And of the angels He says, "WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS, AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE."

Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

There are many places that human men and angels are called the 'sons of God'. (lower case)
Gen 6:2; Gen 6:4; Job 1:6; Job 2:1; Job 38:7; Matt 5:9; Luke 20:36; Rom 8:14; Rom 8:19; Gal 3:26

and there are over 40 places in the NT that Jesus is called the 'Son of God'. (upper case)
Matt 4:3; Matt 4:6; Matt 8:29; Matt 26:63; Matt 27:40; Luke 4:3; Luke 4:41; Luke 22:70; John 1:34;
John 3:18; John 5:25; John 11:4; etc...

There is a big difference between being 'a son of God' and 'THE Son of God'.
Of course there is the Holy Trinity, and we know that Jesus is God. We know that the angels are not God(s).
Even though Satan tried to lift himself above God (see previous post).

Jesus created everything.
Col 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created through Him and for Him.

John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Heb 1:2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

This would include the angels.

Heb 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

About 6 months ago I took my wife to a meeting at the very large Church in Apple Valley. It was not a church event, they were just using one of the rooms at the Church. I sat in my car waiting for the meeting to end listening to Christian music, and having fellowship with the Lord in the Spirit.


It was night time, cold, and the wind was blowing very very hard. All of a sudden a man came up to my window and knocked for me to talk to him. He looked like he had not shaven in several days, and his clothes were pretty cruddy looking like he was homeless. I rolled down the window, and he asked if I knew someone by a certain name. I said “no, does he go to this Church”. He just shrugged his shoulders, and then all of a sudden he began to talk to me about the Lord. Then he started quoting scripture. I thought to myself, I like this guy he was a man after my own heart, so I started quoting scripture back to him. I could sense the presence of the Lord there. After talking for a few minutes to this guy about the Lord, he started to walk off. He took about seven steps, stopped, turned around, looked at me and said, “Do you know what love is” I smiled, and said, “God is love”. He smiled back and said, “have a blessed life”!!!

I don't know how anyone who could stand there talking to me in the freezing cold wind, without a coat on and never complained about it. I don't know if this guy was an angel or not, but it was not your normal kind of activity one would expect in such conditions!!!

A couple of weeks later at the same Church at night, while I was waiting for my wife to finish at her meeting, I got out of my car and started walking around to stretch my legs. I walked by another car parked about fifty feet away. As I walked by a lady opened the car door, and said: “come here”. I walked over, and she said: “what are you doing?” I said,” just walking around waiting for my wife” I looked into the car, and I saw two people in the back seat and two people in the front seat. Two men, and two women, and they all were looking at me with big smiles on their faces. They were not young, and they looked like elderly people. I said to them, “what are you guys doing here, is there a special event at this Church tonight? They shook their heads as if they did not have an answer. I knew nothing was going on because the Church building was locked up, and all the lights were off. The lady asked if I knew where I was going if I died that night? I said “I sure do, in fact, I am sitting in Heavenly places in Christ Jesus right now!!!

Heb 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

About 6 months ago I took my wife to a meeting at the very large Church in Apple Valley. It was not a church event, they were just using one of the rooms at the Church. I sat in my car waiting for the meeting to end listening to Christian music, and having fellowship with the Lord in the Spirit.


It was night time, cold, and the wind was blowing very very hard. All of a sudden a man came up to my window and knocked for me to talk to him. He looked like he had not shaven in several days, and his clothes were pretty cruddy looking like he was homeless. I rolled down the window, and he asked if I knew someone by a certain name. I said “no, does he go to this Church”. He just shrugged his shoulders, and then all of a sudden he began to talk to me about the Lord. Then he started quoting scripture. I thought to myself, I like this guy he was a man after my own heart, so I started quoting scripture back to him. I could sense the presence of the Lord there. After talking for a few minutes to this guy about the Lord, he started to walk off. He took about seven steps, stopped, turned around, looked at me and said, “Do you know what love is” I smiled, and said, “God is love”. He smiled back and said, “have a blessed life”!!!

I don't know how anyone who could stand there talking to me in the freezing cold wind, without a coat on and never complained about it. I don't know if this guy was an angel or not, but it was not your normal kind of activity one would expect in such conditions!!!

A couple of weeks later at the same Church at night, while I was waiting for my wife to finish at her meeting, I got out of my car and started walking around to stretch my legs. I walked by another car parked about fifty feet away. As I walked by a lady opened the car door, and said: “come here”. I walked over, and she said: “what are you doing?” I said,” just walking around waiting for my wife” I looked into the car, and I saw two people in the back seat and two people in the front seat. Two men, and two women, and they all were looking at me with big smiles on their faces. They were not young, and they looked like elderly people. I said to them, “what are you guys doing here, is there a special event at this Church tonight? They shook their heads as if they did not have an answer. I knew nothing was going on because the Church building was locked up, and all the lights were off. The lady asked if I knew where I was going if I died that night? I said “I sure do, in fact, I am sitting in Heavenly places in Christ Jesus right now!!!
