Then Moses summoned the leaders of the tribes of Israel and told them, "This is what the LORD has commanded: A man who makes a vow to the LORD or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do. Numbers 30:1-2 NLT
Jesus once addressed the importance of keeping our word when He said, “Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one” (Matthew 5:36-37).
The scripture passage above strongly affirms the importance of always keeping our word.
We Christian men are called to reflect God in every area of our lives, and that includes always keeping our word, just as He does: “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19).
Before you make a vow or promise, make sure to carefully consider in your heart whether you are fully committed to keeping it. While God forgives this and any other sin, you put yourself in a dangerous place when you don’t follow through on what you have told God you will do.
Prayer: Father in heaven, may I always keep my word—to You and to others.
