Acting On What You Know

But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. James 1:22

You can’t be a part of our modern-day culture without knowing a little something about what it takes to be physically healthy. Almost daily you see and hear messages encouraging you to eat right and get enough exercise to keep your mind and body operating at peak efficiency.

Sadly, too many people know about these physical truths but don’t act on them. The results speak for themselves. Obesity and the physical problems that accompany inactivity are at all-time highs. As a whole, North Americans aren’t very physically healthy.

Today’s verse gives Christian people some very simple instructions for getting and staying spiritually healthy. It tells you that you’re not just to read what the Bible tells you that you should do, but you are also to put what you know into action. Sadly, many Christians don’t consistently put what they know the Bible says into practice. The result is that they’re in a spiritually unhealthy condition.

God’s written Word is filled cover to cover with all kinds of truths, wisdom, and commands. And while it’s a good thing to read the Bible and learn what it has to teach you, that’s only the first step. The second step—and this means everything—is to act on what you learn.
