The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want. ...Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever. Psalm 23:1,6
Psalm 23 is a comforting passage, often read at sickbeds or funerals. But even with its famous reference to god's presence in the valley of death's shadow, the psalm is really about life. Most of its words describe God's presence, protection, and provision as you go through life's mountaintops and valleys.
God wants you to walk with Him so you get the most out of life (John 10:10). You can see His desire for relationship with His people when He told Moses how to introduce Him to Israel: "I am the Lord…I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God" (Exodus 6:6-7).
God had been known as God Almighty to the patriarchs, but here He opened a whole new level of intimacy. It's even deeper today--through Jesus, you are an adopted son of God. Consider what that means for you--the resources at your disposal to do your Father's work--experience His blessings, and just enjoy knowing Him.
Prayer: Father, I can't wait to come home to You, but until then, let me walk more closely with You each day.
