It seems the word "abomination" has come up frequently here on TalkJesus. Most often with homosexuality, so much so, that it seems that homosexuality
is the "only" abomination in the Bible. This is not true at all. For some reason we think this is the most sin in the Bible, but many other sins are equally bad.
Yes homosexuality is an abomination.
Lev 18:22; 'You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.
But so are dozens of other things.
Deut 7:25; "The graven images of their gods you are to burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be snared by it, for it is an abomination to the LORD your God.
Deut 7:26; "You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and like it come under the ban; you shall utterly detest it and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is something banned.
Worshiping idols are also an abomination. Yet how many "Christians" have statues of Mary, Buddha, and Shiva in their houses? How many have "dream catchers" and
"mother earth" and "wolf spirit" posters on the walls?
Cross-dressing is an abomination.
Deut 22:5; "A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.
Tithing money earned from prostitution is an abomination.
Deut 23:18; "You shall not bring the hire of a harlot or the wages of a dog (male prostitute) into the house of the LORD your God for any votive offering, for both of these are an abomination to the LORD your God.
Cheating people for what they pay for is an abomination. I'm an old man now, but I remember scales in stores. You put a 5 lbs weight on one side, then you put an empty bag on the other side.
You filled up the bag (with rice, oats, corn, or whatever) until the balance leveled out evenly. These days it's all electronic or printed on the side of the box and we have to believe them.
(Although I have weighed some of these boxes, and sometime you don't get what you pay for). How many of us have put down extra hours on our time card at work that we didn't
actually work?
Prov 11:1; A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight.
Habitually lying is an abomination to God. How many of us have ever told a lie?
Prov 12:22; Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, But those who deal faithfully are His delight.
Simply being prideful, and arrogant is an abomination. (does that make "gay pride" a double abomination?
Prov 16:5; Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished.
Even the prayers of those who don't want to follow the commandments are an abomination to God.
Prov 28:9; He who turns away his ear from listening to the law, Even his prayer is an abomination.
Prov 6:16; There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
Prov 6:17; Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood,
Prov 6:18; A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil,
Prov 6:19; A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Even adultery is an abomination.
Ezek 22:11; "One has committed abomination with his neighbor's wife and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law. And another in you has humbled his sister, his father's daughter.
There are about a dozen more things that are called abominations in the Bible, why do we think homosexuality is "worse" than these other things?
