A word of encouragement.
If you are a Christian and think you still struggle at times, you are not alone. Jesus said we will all have trials and tribulations, but take heart. You think that St. Paul was a solid Christian, so do I but, read his own words about struggle. In Romans 7, he states that he does what he doesn't want to do and doesn't do what he wants to do. He questions what is to become of him and, then in Romans 8:1, he gives the answer for any of us that have any form of bondage of not always being perfect: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ"...be encourage and praise the name of God!

1 Peter 1:6-8
6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire,
might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

The trial of our faith is necessary to grow and mature in wisdom. It is described often in Psalms and Proverbs. It separates the chaff from the wheat. It makes the weak strong in Christ and in using the Holy Spirit. God values our faith, and especially our ability to keep faithful despite adversity. It is pretty much the best we can offer to the Lord in exchange for his faith in us.
"When the going gets tough, the afflicted get praying."

Revelation 3:11-12
11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
12 Him that overcomes will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God,
and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
