In AD 496, Pope Gelasius marked February 14 as a celebration in honor of Saint Valentine, a mysterious figure from AD 269 who may have been martyred for performing secret marriages for Christians. Or maybe Valentine healed the blind daughter of a judge who was antagonistic toward Christianity, eventually converting him and his household and persuading him to free the Christians he had imprisoned.
Officially speaking, even the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t know much about Saint Valentine. That’s why they removed Valentine’s Day from the General Roman Calendar in 1969, even though he’s still recognized as a saint.
With all the confusion over Valentine’s life, let us be clear about the expressions of love his name brings to mind. While today may feature written expressions of love, true love expresses itself in meeting the needs of others. When we care for those in need, we’re actually showing love to the Creator who made all people in His image.
On this Valentine’s Day, show others God’s love in practical ways, and give a valentine to God Himself.
Prayer: Lord, help me love like You, and in so doing, show You love by caring for others.
