A true story from my family's annals

My mother, as a child, lived on a large farm. Friends and relatives were scattered at great distances from one another, so family get-togethers were few and far between.

My mother's uncle was a preacher, a very good man, and he and his wife had founded a small church many miles away. One time they came to visit my mother's family.

In those days, when people came for a visit, they planned on staying a month or more, so they brought everything they would need in a large trunk. The trunk was stored in a little room off the central hall, called, appropriately, the "trunk room".

Uncle seemed to be a bit eclectic in his explorations of divine worship, and recently he had become somewhat charismatic. He kept talking all the time about holiness and sanctification, and one day he preached to the family about becoming "sanctified".

In the afternoon, while everyone was taking a nap, my mother, aged about 4, got up and tiptoed into the trunk room, where she began to snoop in Uncle's and Aunt's trunk. For you see, she knew that people who were really holy, really sanctified, became like the angels--at least that is what she had understood from Uncle's sermon.

When she was discovered, of course she was in a lot of trouble. My grandmother said, "What on earth are you doing? Snooping in Uncle's trunk!"

Mama replied, innocent as a little girl could possibly be, "Well, Uncle said he was sanctified. I was just looking for his wings!"
