Jesus said in Mark 2:20 “But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.” Jesus also said in John 14:30 “Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.”
This time of fasting and spiritual famine by not “hearing” the words of God was also shown in Amos 8:11 “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:”
This time period was symbolized many times in scripture, but in different ways and times. One of the first signs we have of this is in the number 40 in the flood account. Genesis 7:4 “For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.” We also see the sign here in Numbers 14:34 “After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.”
Now some might wonder what the flood and the wandering in the wilderness have in common, but I believe the Lord gave both so we might better understand the "spiritual things" that were yet to come on the earth on a grand scale. We see both "the sign" of the flood and the wandering in the wilderness in the woman in Revelation 12:6 “And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.” And then the sign of the flood in Revelation 12:15 “And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.” (carried away by strange doctrine of the ungodly Ephesians 4:14, Hebrews 13:9)
Both the flood and the wandering in the wilderness were to remove and destroy all those who were of the "flesh." Just as the spirit of Death was sent to Destroy all those who had not the blood of the Lamb on their houses at Passover. The Destroyer came to kill all the "firstborn" of man and beast, just as the "first man" Adam is "flesh." These examples were pointing to the spiritual things to come.
Notice in Revelation 12:6 we are told “the woman had a place prepared by God, and that they should feed her there 1,260 days=3.6 years. This same sign is shown in Elijah, when there was to be a drought and "famine" upon the land for 3.6 years. 1 Kings 17:4 “And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.” And this time period is also confirmed in James 5:17 “Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. (42 months)
So this time of fasting and feeding is shown in different numerical values, and in different ways. Another sign of this was shown in Moses who "fasted" 40 days and 40 nights in Exodus 34:28 “And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.”
And also in Jesus in the wilderness in Matthew 4:2 “And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.”
And like the children of Israel and the woman in the wilderness, they all were tempted of Satan just like Jesus in Mark 1:13 “And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.”
Notice it was the angels that ministered to Jesus, and also notice Elijah was fed of the Angel in 1 Kings 19:8 “And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.” Which can also be seen in Jesus after being filled with the Holy Ghost went into the wilderness 40 days… Luke 4:1 “And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil.”
This being fed by angels, or ministered to by angels is also spoken of here in Hebrews 1:14 "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"
Notice in the examples above they were all helped and ministered to, even by receiving that"angels food" (manna) from heaven. Psalm 78:25 “Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.”
But like with the children of Israel many in the Church would also be drawn away and overcome by sinful lusts and desires, playing the Harlot in the wilderness of Sin. Revelation 17:3 “So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.”
But those who would remain faithful would be given the "spiritual meat" that does not perish, in due season. Matthew 24:45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
This time of fasting and wandering in the wilderness of sin is almost over, and the time of feeding draws near in due season. The marriage supper of the Lamb also draws near, so keep your garments clean and unspotted from the ways of the world.
Peace and God bless
