I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing to You among the nations. 10 For Your mercy reaches unto the heavens, And Your truth unto the clouds. Psalm 57:9-10 NKJV

David wrote today’s psalm while hiding out in a cave from King Saul, who was intent on killing the young king-to-be. While David in his flawed humanity had reason to feel a sense of hopelessness over his situation, he still gave voice to his faith in the Lord when he wrote, “Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed” (Psalm 57:1).

God called David “a man after his own heart” (see 1 Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22), and Psalm 57 shows us why. David was far from perfect, but he believed God and clung to His promises—and His heart of love for David—and took refuge in Him, even in times when it seemed things couldn’t get any worse.

Follow David’s example. Take refuge in God always, especially when you are in a seemingly impossible place of difficulty. And while you’re at it, open your mouth and praise His name!

Prayer: Loving Father in heaven, no matter how difficult—even hopeless-my life situation may feel, I will choose to dwell in Your love and speak to others of Your love and faithfulness.
