Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Philippians 2:7

Today is Presidents’ Day, and though George Washington was elected America’s first president in 1789, the most remarkable thing he ever did was give up his power. So potent was Washington’s popularity and leadership that there was a public outcry that he remain president as long as he would.

His guidance of the nation in its infancy, however, was matched only by his desire to see it thrive beyond his life, and to do so, there needed to be a safe, stable transfer of power. It was unheard of to give up power—still true today!—especially when victory had been so hard fought for and won, but Washington had a bigger vision.

God had an even more impressive vision for all of mankind—a way to buy His people back from sin and its deprivations—and He had just the Man for the job. Where Washington gave up his office so that he could enjoy the fruits of his accomplishments (and justifiably so!), Jesus gave up His place in heaven at God’s right hand to be bound by the frailty of flesh and blood, to have needs and urges', to face temptation and opposition and betrayal firsthand (unheard of!).

He fought your biggest foes—sin, death, and hell—to be able to adopt you as a son and brother.
