A Greater Obedience

This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God--who does not lie--promised them before the world began. Titus 1:1-2

Paul had initiated his work by founding churches in Crete. He then passed the work on to a younger man named Titus whom he called his "my true son in the faith".

For Titus, this letter from Paul was an instruction manual, personal encouragement, and a reminder that every day that Titus shared God's message, he could trust God to lead. Titus was considered trustworthy when he agreed to point the way to endless life by introducing people to God, the Author of trust.

God knows He uses people who make wrong choices, which is why He had Paul include a list of qualifications for those aspiring to church leadership (see vv.5-9). Paul knew that people needed to see those who led as trustworthy because if they weren't trustworthy when they shared the truth, then how could people trust the Gospel? How could they trust the God behind the message?

Greater obedience leads to greater trust. Greater trust leads to greater faith.

Prayer: Lord, help me to keep my word to others. Help me to keep my word to You. I fail and will continue to fail, but when others find they can trust me, it's only because I have discovered I can trust You.
