A [good] name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold. Proverbs 22:1 NKJV
It’s probably safe to say that you can think of examples of men who have accomplished great things—and made huge amounts of money—but who didn’t have the best of reputations when it came to their personal behavior. In the worlds of athletics, business, entertainment, and more, many men have sacrificed their good names as they achieved great success.
Today’s scripture verse indicates it’s never a good idea to pursue worldly riches at the expense of a good reputation. In fact, it says that having a good name is better than having all the riches in the world while being saddled with a bad reputation.
Being unshakable in your life of faith means zealously guarding your reputation. And zealously guarding your reputation means being unshakably committed to living, speaking, and thinking in ways that glorify God. Doing those things doesn’t guarantee that everyone will think and speak well of you. But it will ensure that no one will have a legitimate reason to look down on you for anything you’ve said or done.
Prayer: Lord, I want to have a good reputation in all my dealings and relationships. But more than that, I want to be worthy of that good reputation. Build in me good character so that others will see You in me.
