I am writing on behalf of Lynda Rose and Dr Lisa Nolland from Anglican Mainstream.
As you are no doubt too aware, the world is facing a growing tide of darkness – of spiritual attack that threatens to destroy the very foundations of society. All around we’re seeing economies collapse, coupled with growing civil unrest in once stable (if sometimes unjust) nations - but it’s worse than that. The real battle, in the West at least, is the imposition of humanist secular values that will strip men and women of value and our God given identity. In our own country, the UK, we are witnessing an unprecedented attack on the rights to freedom of belief and speech. Here, as elsewhere, attempts are being made to redefine marriage in a way that will not only restructure family groupings within society, but will redefine – rewrite - the Christian faith. This is a neo-pagan battle for supremacy – a spiritual battle for the heart and soul of our world.
It was for this, to rescue us from ever-encroaching chaos and death, that over two thousand years ago Christ died. His death was not in vain, so now we must stand for the Gospel. But though we may speak out and run our various campaigns, the real battle is always, and without exception, first fought in prayer and fasting.
We might campaign by writing letters, attending conferences, staging public protests, lobbying MPs , even be prepared to go to prison, but anything we do without the covering of prayer is futile. I am as guilty as anyone for plunging into activity without reporting to “HQ” and waiting on God to hear what He has to say on a particular matter that might have me transfixed.
During the last war, the nation was called to prayer on many occasions. With increasing setbacks besetting the English-speaking peoples—economic, military, social and even climatic—the time has come for national repentance, for another day of prayer like the one called for by King George VI in the dark days of 1942, but until that happens we need start fasting and praying now in earnest.
Operation Sovereign is a prayer initiative first pioneered at St Andrew’s Church, Oxford. It started in response to a vision of the spiritual battle raging over the city, and evolved from a call to pray in the Lord’s blessing and anointing. Now we feel He is asking us to extend that field of prayer, and pray His light into the growing darkness afflicting the world. We believe the Lord Himself has plans, and that our prayers will open doors through which His saving power will be poured out in blessing.
Will you join us?
Will you commit to just 15 minutes each week to join an army of prayer warriors? We want globally for one year to make Wednesdays an international day of prayer, specifically to pray God’s blessing and Light into the dark places of the world. We’ll send you guidance on how to pray, and link you electronically with your own special prayer buddy for personal prayer and support (your data will not be shared with anyone else without your express permission). And each week we’ll send out a bulletin, detailing current developments and suggesting areas for prayer for that week.
We’d like to cover the whole twenty four hour period, but we’re not asking anyone to commit specifically to praying at night – unless, of course, they want to. Rather, as people sign up from all over the world and different time zones, we believe this will happen naturally.
So pick any fifteen minute period: 0- 15; 15- 30; 30 -45 and 45- 60 minutes out of any hour from the 24 hour clock that most suits you and we’ll do the rest!
