“A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
But a just weight is His delight.
When pride comes, then comes dishonor,
But with the humble is wisdom.
The integrity of the upright will guide them,
But the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them.
Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
But righteousness delivers from death.
The righteousness of the blameless will smooth his way,
But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright will deliver them,
But the treacherous will be caught by their own greed.
When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish,
And the hope of strong men perishes.” (Proverbs 11:1-7 NASB1995)

A false balance, or dishonest scales, has to do with business owners who cheat their customers. But this is not limited to just the world of commerce, but it extends to all dishonest practices and manipulative measures used to take advantage of others for personal gain. And this can be done by anyone via a multitude of means of manipulative efforts in a multitude of situations, both private and public. And personal gain doesn’t have to be monetary, but it can be to gain control or power over others for the purpose to abuse them.

So, this is about liars and cheats who take advantage of the trust of other people in order to gain some kind of sinful advantage over them and/or in order to persuade them of their lies in order to get them to do something that they want them to do, which may or may not be harmful to themselves and/or to others. Sometimes this is done by people full of pride, sometimes in order to get even with others who may have discovered their deceitfulness and who may have confronted them with their lies and their manipulations.

And not all these who are liars and manipulators are those out in the world who make no professions of faith in Jesus Christ. Some, or many of them, are pastors of these institutional market-driven “churches” (businesses) incorporated under (merged, united, combined with) the state. And some, or many of them, are husbands or wives who are cheating on their spouses, and who are living in sexual immorality, and who are hiding what they are doing from their spouses and are lying to them to cover up their own sins.

In contrast to the liars and the cheats who mislead others, in order to take advantage of their trust, are the righteous and the godly who put their trust in the Lord Jesus, and who follow in his ways, in the ways that he leads them. They have humbled themselves before the Lord in submission to his will in walks of surrender to his authority and in order to faithfully obey his commandments (New Covenant). They are people of integrity who do not make lying and cheating their practice, but who practice telling the truth.

And when this says here that “righteousness delivers from death,” this is not just Old Testament teaching. This is taught in the New Testament, as well. For we read in 1 John 3 that the one who practices righteousness is the one who is righteous in the sight of God. And the one who practices sin is of the devil. And no one born of God practices sin. So anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, and thus does not have salvation from sin and eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23; Galatians 5:16-21).

The grace of God, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for Jesus’ return. For Christ “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (See Titus 2:11-14; Ephesians 2:8-10)

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

Walking daily with my Savior
brings me joy.
Loving Father; precious Jesus;
He’s my Savior and my Lord.
Gently leads me; follow Him.
I’ve invited Him within.
Now abiding in His presence,
oh, what peace.
From my self-life
He has brought me,
By His mercy, full release.

Hope and comfort,
peace and safety Jesus brings
When I daily bow before Him;
Obey freely; do His will.
Follow Him where’er He leads.
Listen to Him; His words heed.
Now obeying his words fully,
oh, what love
That He gives me
through salvation,
By His Spirit, from above.

Loving Father; precious Jesus,
He’s my friend.
With my Savior, by His Spirit,
I will endure to the end.
Share the gospel, tell what’s true.
Witness daily; His will do.
Tell the world of how their Savior
bled and died.
On a cruel cross He suffered
So that we might be alive.
