For the word of God [is] living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 NKJV

Have you ever read a passage of scripture that seemed to be speaking directly to you? Perhaps it spoke directly to your current situation. Ever feel as if God had written it as a personal note to you and you alone? If so, it’s probably because you’ve preceded your reading with prayer, asking God to illuminate what He wants His Word to say to you that day.

The Bible is an amazing book. It’s not just a big collection of great stories. It’s also your comprehensive instruction manual for walking with God and living the Christian life. And when you accompany your bible reading with prayer, God Himself speaks to you personally as you read.

In recent years, the United States Constitution has been referred to as “a living, breathing document,” as if its meaning evolves to fit the needs of specific times in history. Well, God’s Word is a living, breathing book. That’s not because its meaning changes, but because it can speak into any situation and at any time. Ask God to speak to you again today.

Prayer: Lord God, Your written Word contains everything I need to live Your way. May I read it prayerfully and receptively again today.
