My eye wastes away because of affliction. LORD, I have called daily upon You; I have stretched out my hands to You. Psalm 88:9 NKJV
If you’re honest with yourself, you have to admit that Psalm 88 is a gloomy piece of writing. In it, the psalmist first praises God for saving him and then presents a series of sorrowful laments. In the midst of his complaints, the writer presents a moment of hope in today’s scripture quotation.
Today’s psalm is not an easy read, but it can challenge you to praise and thank God in easy and difficult times alike. True, it’s not easy to praise God when you’re going through difficulties. But when you praise Him and reach up to Him, even when you don’t feel like it, He’ll strengthen and encourage you. He may even teach you some wisdom in the midst of your trials.
What does your walk with God look like when your life is difficult, when it seems like He’s disappeared in the midst of your troubles? Do you find yourself of withdrawing and trying to handle your problems on your own? Or do you spread out your hands to Him, praise His name, and ask Him to bless you through everything?
Prayer: Merciful Father, when I’m going through tough times, I don’t usually feel like praying or praising Your name. Strengthen me during those times, and help me remember that You always deserve my praise.
