New European Version
21 For it werebetter for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after knowingit, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 It has happenedto them according to the true proverb: A dog returns to his own vomit and asow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.

21 There may be some form of mercy given to those who havenot heard or who do not understand, to what extent this goes could be up fordebate but there are people who have been told and reject. This is saying thatit is better to be a part of the world to live as the world then to come toChrist and continue live as the world. Living as the world but being aChristian hurts our testimony, hurts our witness and can keep others fromcoming to Christ, this not something people who remained outside the faith haveto deal with as they sin. He may also be referring to that those who were giventhe law to live by should continue to live by the law even though they havecame to Christ, not for salvation. Paul taught that you did not have to keepthe law to have salvation; Peter is saying if you have lived by the law andthen came to Christ it is still best you keep the law as you have as you serveChrist.

The Jewish people that left in the Exodus often longed for things of <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">Egypt</st1lace></st1:country-region> and thisdid not make God happy, when we return to the acts or want the things from ourbondage of sin, it does not make God happy.
