A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves." So Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil." 2 Kings 4:1-2 NKJV
Why do wise men buy term life insurance? Typically, to provide for and protect their wives and children in the case of their untimely deaths.
Tragically, for more than five thousand years—including up to the present time especially in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia—if a debtor dies, the creditor forces the debtor’s children and/or wife to work as slaves until the debt is repaid. This accounts for nearly half of today’s modern slaves.
No wonder the deceased prophet’s wife was in such duress. In answer to Elisha’s question, she replied, “Your servant has nothing there at all.” Then she added, “except a small jar of olive oil” (2 Kings 4:2).
From that small jar, a wonderful miracle occurred, a great quantity of olive oil was sold, the debt was fully repaid, and the widow and her two boys had plenty of money left to continually meet their needs.
Prayer: Lord, please provide for and protect my family. In wisdom, Help me to trust You, my Provider, with my whole heart.
