I will hear what God the LORD will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly. Psalm 85:8 NKJV
These two little words—I will—can lead us down vastly different paths.
Consider the boastful claims of the king of Babylon, in which some see the origins of Satan’s fall:
For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' Isaiah 14:13-14 NKJV
Now contrast those “I wills” with the “I will” of today’s scripture. “I will hear what God the Lord will speak” This commitment sets us on the path to righteousness and eternal life. But it’s only a start.
After the listening comes the doing. As the New Testament writer James succinctly put it, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (1:22).
If we hear God’s Word and do it, we’ll avoid the “turning to folly” that Psalm 85:8 warns about. Today, may we commit our hearts and minds to the narrow path that leads to life.
Prayer: Father in heaven, I will listen to what You say—and do it.
